Just heard that the guy at the front door drove himself to the hospital and lived. Doctor reported he didn't have much time left. His quick decision saved his life.

Well, it wasn't a long shot even for a pistol. And if you spend enough time training at the range (as any responsible gun owner should), it becomes second nature (the Marines call it muscle memory). The adrenaline is flowing, so all the training kicks in and voila.
