Whipple Shade Tree Install *Complete with Dyno numbers*
Note: Big thanks to Tim at TandT performance He was great help from purchasing to installing. He had great experience with this Kit, I couldn't have done it without his help.
Also big thanks to Motiva in Albuquerque, they helped me fix all the stupid things my installer messed up on and gave me a great tune!It arrived, expect nightly updates through Saturday, when it's tuned. A few notes, I'm about a shade tree mechanic level 5 (I apparently need to collect more Pokeman to get 6) I'm somewhat comfortable with anything that is mechanical but not internal to the transmission or engine. I know enough about electrical not to kill myself or break something. I'm doing this install myself for two reasons. #1 I love working with my hands and regardless of what it is house, car etc I try to do it myself first my job rarely affords me the chance. #2 Not a lot of local options and I don't want to go a month without my car. One weekend and done. What I'm installing: Polished Whipple Full Kit, Kooks LT headers and Cats After working my way up through a lot of old cars that needed pretty constant attention I have a lot of tools but I didn't have everything here's what I had to buy 1/4 torque wrench in inch pounds about $90 amazon. (Forgot to set mine back to 0 the last time I used it....) New Air compressor $350 (I have all the tools my craftsman broke years ago and just never had a good excuse to replace it) Kent-Moore J-42386-A Flywheel Holder-Casting $90 1 1/6 12 point impact socket $8 3 quarts water wetter $40 Blue loctite $7 (Not sure what the difference is but I arnt an engeneer) Drill oil $5 In the end I probably won't save much money installing it myself but that's not really why I'm doing it. I'll get drunk and take lots of pictures should be fun. Tim at TandT performance has been very helpful and so have Jeff and Mike at whipple. I'm sure I'll be calling them for some help Thurs and Fri. Checked my parts list here's a picture in the box Last edited by bigsquirrel; 10-27-2010 at 08:47 PM. Reason: Additional Info |

Got an early start
I wasn't going to start till tomorrow but I got the itch.... Made it to page 25 of 75 in about 4 hours, with breaks to play with the dog smoke drink etc. Finished the inter-cooler install.
Get all the essentials in order: Check for Codes and fuel trim, all good Disconnect the Battery, watch your tail Jack up the car for bumper removal Take off the bumper, helps to have a buddy luckily the Lorax was still at my house nursing a hangover Put in the inter-cooler pump and harness Grabbed my favourite bottle and called it a night, it's fricking raining here for the first time in a month so no cigar tonight.... More tomorrow night all. Last edited by bigsquirrel; 10-21-2010 at 01:02 AM. Reason: Update 1 |

Day 2
Got started a little late, got hung up on a few little things, petcock problems and the headers were being stubborn coming off my catback but I'm confident I'll finish tomorrow.
Stuck to beer today Took off the throttle body coil packs etc. Took off then tensioner and belt Changed the spark plugs Took off the headers and O2 sensors Pinned the crank (I was nervous about this one but it went fine) Hope to finish tomorrow. Night all. Last edited by bigsquirrel; 10-22-2010 at 01:18 AM. Reason: day 2 update |

So I had a few problems day 3, none paricularly related to the supercharger. I couldn't get My new headers to mount to my cherry bomb exhaust to save my life, AND THE FRIKKIN DIPSTICK TUBE
![]() ![]() Thankfully Motvia helped me put on the exhaust and DIPSTICK TUBE before the Dyno, got to about 500 RWHP and Torque before the heat problem became apparent. I left it there and hopefully on Monday we'll figure out what I did wrong. Sounded fantastic though!!!Put on the MSD, I sound proofed my trunk to help with exhaust noise made this step a little harder Put on the Supercharger, get a friend it's a beast Attatch all your hoses and plugs (Don't forget the MAP little bastard is hidden behind the supercharger when you install)Have a shop dyno/varify the install Glad I did because I messed up on something. 3 things aren't working correctly, Water/Inter-cooler Pump and power steering. I have no idea what these three have in common but I'm sure I missed a plug or ground or routed the belt incorrectly, because I didn't touch the power steering during the install. But on the positive side, all the things I was really worried about went fine, no vacuum/boost/coolant/oil leak or anything major and started to make some good power so I'm very pleased and hope to get the car back very soon. Here's what you've been waiting for, Dave at Motiva gave me a very safe tune and an extra 50 over the whipple stock tune, worth every penny. In a few weeks he'll move my IAT sensor (I think that was it) to the rail and retune.
Things I learned from the install: Get two people to put your dipstick back in. The oil that comes with the Kit is not drilling oil. Supercharger oil can be purchased at any GM dealer for about $10. Make sure you tie up your O2 sensors really well. Keep the scotch to 2 fingers an hour during the install. Last edited by bigsquirrel; 10-27-2010 at 08:54 PM. Reason: Update 4 |

BS, I think we may be long lost cousins or branch kin or something like that, I did the same thing last week with my Maggie Install and despite being a Pikachu or two short of level 6 it went well, good luck and I look forward to seeing the pictures and progress.
![]() PS, don't worry about the blue loctite the blood off your knuckles will hold about the same.
