Don't want Headers, But can I just cut out the Cats?

I have the Flowmaster American Thunder Cat back exhaust and I love the sound. My issue is that I just installed a TVS 2300 Maggie and I need the exhaust to breath a little more.. My local tuner said I could just cut out the CATS all together and that would help out alot.... I have the stock manifolds and the maggie needs a little more air space..

Will the exhaust be real loud without the cats?

Will it still sound good with no cats?

Does anyone have a sound clip of no cats with stock mainfolds?

Thanks for you Opinions

As long as you don't have to pass an emissions test then it should be fine. It will be louder/higher flowing but you will get a CEL so it will need a tune still.

New midpipes are what you need. I'd go hi-flow cats if you have the cash.

You really need headers IMO.

If you don't want headers I think high flow cats are the next best choice.

Removing the cats is a federal offense!

Question related to this topic:

What's the difference between getting the midpipe, rather than just swapping out the current cats for high-flow cats?

Do you mean the difference between a midpipe with high flow cats and just cutting off the stock cats and replacing them with high flow ones?

The midpipe option would be completely bolt on so easier installation and you'll probably throw a CEL if you just cut/replace the cats.

Yes, that was my question. Thanks!

I don't actually intend on doing this, just thought I would help out the OP.

ADM and some other vendors sell race pipes that take the place of the cat section. High flow cats are expensive. Its cheaper to just replace the stock cats with a race pipe (go catless) if you're looking for cheap HP. Then when you have emissions testing, etc you can just put your cats back on.

Why don't you want headers?

Red face

You need to quit kidding yourself and put on a good exhaust system and headers to go with the maggie.

If you are going to go the work of putting on new cats and still needing a tune, might as well go the hole shootin' match

I don't want headers because they are too loud... I am going to keep the stock manifolds and just remove the cats I think.
