Threshold for a stall converter

Although I'm a LS3 guy, I'd be curious about where the hp/torque borderline is actually crossed for a moderatly cammed and tuned L99:

After what tuning stages, or hp/ft-lbs increases have you guys been installing a stall converter, to keep your car away from trying to run-off while on the brakes?

Where's the best source to get a decent yank or similar product, besides converter.cc?

Is it a major PITA to get this installed and calibrated (hours/$)?

Thanks for helping me out here

Insatlling a new TC is pretty straightforward on a 5th gen Camaro. And there is no "threshold".

A good one properly matched to your car will drop your 1/4 mile ET 1/2 second or better BONE STOCK! Best mod for the money if quicker acceleration is your goal.

The ones I use are all made to order, and it is not unusual to see .7sec improvement.

I also will buy it back if not happy.

The 1/4 mile part sounds very promising!

The threshhold question was more around how long (performance-wise) can I use the stock converter 'til an aftermarket becomes "necessary"

What do you mean with "properly matched" (noob-ish question I know, my bad)?

I really appreciate the buy-back offer, but fyi - that'll mean buying back from Germany....

Germany is a bit far on the buy-back. LOL

The stock converter would need upgraded when the cam grind gets to radical to idle low enough.

Yank makes a good converter and for years it is all we used in our race LS cars, but we teamed with FTI a few years back and consistantly se 1-2 tenths quicker w/the new design and have yet to break one. All are built to the dyno sheet and mod specs from your car, nothing off the shelf and around the same price.

When? Is when the cam is so big the car won't idle at such a low rpm that it wants to surge forward all time.

When for me. Is the second the car hits my hands lol.

I think you would be hard pressed to find any other mod at the $$ to gain soo much

Nevermind, I'm getting used to this

Is it just about the idle, or does the increased torque at low (1000-2000) rpms play a significant role on upgrading as well?

So besides the mod list, the dyno sheet specs the converter afterall?

Thanx for your help!!!

A have to is when you have to set the idle speed over 650rpm.I know because mine is set to 650 and it is close to pushing.
When you should get it- First mod.

The TC also puts you in the powerband quicker, sort of like a clutch dump on a standard trans.

are there any negatives to a new TC? As far as damaging drivetrain? How much does it affect driveability for an everyday driver?

It requires more pedal to get moving but depending on the rated stall speed they can be very streetable.

You will hit your drivetrain harder due to the converter flashing higher but still nothing as bad as side stepping the clutch in a M6 car.

My Vigilante 3200 feels stock to me anymore and makes me miss the Vigilante 3800 I used to have.

An aftermarket TC hits higher in the RPM's than a stock TC. Usually you specify the RPM where you want it to hook up.

It will make the car more fun to drive since it launches better. It will hit the drivetrain harder when you reach the stall speed.

biggest downfall is that a TC adds heat - hotter trans fluid needs more cooling...

just my $.02....

Pro Torque offers a custom built convertor built for your 2010 L99's that they say will knock .4 to .6 seconds off your quater mile time, stock motor or any modified one, doesn't matter, they build it for your specifications. Expect to pay about $600 - $700 for it.

IMO - a converter is the FIRST thing I'd do in my car. The caveat is that it should be matched to your combination, so if you already know what you're going to be doing, make sure to have it matched.

I won't have another CAMARO (if it's an auto') without a stall. My old one was a 3800 through 3.23s and it was GREAT!!! Just make sure to get a good tune for the tranny to take advantage

Agree 100%.

And a heavy duty aux trans cooler is a must on ANY upgraded TC.
