Exhaust Install - Muffler Shop or Performance Shop

Does anyone have opinions about getting the exhaust installed by a local muffler shop (cheaper -- to save a few bucks) or is it better and more effective to have a car performance shop (such as Livernois, Jannetty, etc...) install it?

Exhaust = ?

Catback or axle back are pretty easy do it yourself mod. Headers requires a little more work.

But I do understand some people don't have the time or ability to do it themselves.

Personally, I prefer performance shops for most work. Then when you decide to get more serious mods, you can have them work on your car. Most performance shops do all types of modifications (from simple stuff like installing exhaust mods to more serious mods like cam installs and superchargers).

I agree. If you have the tools, do it it yourself.

Socket set and wrench set is all you need.... maybe a sawz-all if you want to cut the old system apart... but a hack saw will do the same thing with some elbow grease. Nothin' beats doin' it yourself to really get to know your ride.

That said, I've always gone to my local mom-n-pop muffler shop for performance exhaust systems-- except for the camaro. The XSPower header to tips system was just too price appealing to pass up. Anyway, more often than not, the guys in these shops are real gearheads, and know what works and what doesn't. They can design and install a custom performance exhaust system for half the cost of 90% of the name brands. And you get local support if there is ever a problem. I'd even let them install headers if they labor was cheap.

This is actually a good idea. If you have plans to do anything performance wise to your car, gaining a repore with the performance shop of your choice would be a good idea. Most places will cut you deals if they know you're going to be a repeat customer. This is also provided they don't charge you a arm and a leg to do it. It should be roughly the same at either place. Since a catback/axleback is a bolt on deal, they shouldn't need any specialty tools.
