Help is required
Alright gentlemen, I need some help on a major decision I'm going to have to make, I am about to purchase my first true "Muscle Car" and I am stuck in the position of choosing the 2011 SS Camaro, Or putting the purchase on hold and waiting out the Z/28. I really want to know if the Z/28 (Based on the information you already know) is worth waiting till late this year to finally buy? I would be putting alot of modifications on either car I do end up buying. So tell me what you think.

The Z hasn't even been officially announced yet so it's a ways off till it hits dealers. It's probably another year away. If you are serious about a Z28 you could always get a used 2010 and then trade it in on a Z28 once it becomes available. Or just get a new 2011 and go to town. Expect a Z28 to sticker very close to a GT500 at around $50k+.

Everyone is hyped up about the Z28 and nobody knows exactly what it is going to have for a powerplant (at least not on the outside world looking in). Plenty of speculation. Everyone assumes it will have a supercharger. Just that fact alone scares me away from considering this car for anything other than a garage piece to be driven on weekends etc. Definately not what most would consider a daily driver. If you want to go with power, cheap and brutal, buy the SS and throw on twin turbos! The superchargers develop heat as you drive them hard and they lose efficiency. I had a supercharged car from the factory and after awhile the supercharger will go away (as will any mechanical piece if you run it long and hard). Since you have money to burn, you can get a lot more bang for the buck with a SS and probably be faster than a stock Z28 with no problem. Suspension on the SS up to Z28 standards is fairly easy to accomplish. It only takes cubic cash. My two cents.

Apply the cash saved buying the SS to a solid modification package and you will have a much faster car. The Z28 will be a sweet car but it is mostly about bragging rights to be honest.

Good points all....
My concern would be that the Z28, whenever it comes out, will have a waiting list and it will be an alocated car for the first year....maybe two. That means the dealers will add second stickers.
My guess is that you won't be able to drive one off the lot for under $60K....and a fairly long wait. Secondly.....if it does have the supercharged 556HP motor as seems to be the case, it essentally overkill as a daily driver. (In my opinion). And insurance will be expensive. I got a 2011 SS and love it to death. Your choice....but my money is that you won't be able to get a Z28 for 18 to 24 months..... Desert Dog |

Everybody so far has very valid points on this subject. In my opinion, I would have to weigh the factor of "How will the car be used"? If you plan on it being a Daily Driver, regardless of rain, sleet, or snow, and you plan on modding the heck out of it, I would stick with an SS. If you plan on enjoying the car only on nice sunny days, and keeping it mostly factory stock, and you have the extra cash required, then I would opt for the Z/28. As it has already been pointed out, I think the owning a "Z" is mostly about bragging rights. I think the "Z" will be a fairly desirable collector car in 20 years or so, and be worth keeping in pristine condition. Again, all this is my my own humble opinion.
I have an SS, and I'm very happy with it. I have pondered the idea of trading it in on a Z/28, but as much as I would like to, I think that is out of my budget range. So, I'll probably just stick with my SS and try to keep telling myself "I don't NEED a Z/28"!!! |

You will not go wrong with the purchase of either car. I had the same choice and I elected to wait for the Z28. One, I always wanted a Z28 from the first generation but after seeing the new design, I liked it much better than the first gen. Two, Modding out the SS would most likely void the 5 year warranty, not something that I really wanted to do with a new car. Three, The Z will have all of the engine, brakes and suspensions modifications that I would likely add myself anyway at a cost that will most likely be close to doing it myself and keeping the warranty intact. Four, I found a dealer that said that I would get his first Z28 that he gets. That will remain to be seen. If not, then I am in for a long wait because I am not going to pay over MSRP. So in my opinion, it really depends not so much on the car but what you want in the car and how important the warranty is to you. Good luck with your decision.

Alright then. I believe (Based on everyones input) that the most smart decision would be to purchase the SS, simply because it would we a daily driver and I could easily (with the money I save from not buying the Z/28) mod the car enough to be equal to that of the Z/28 or maybe even better. I will probably await to make this purchase until the spring due to the fact of the Synergy Series that will be coming out. Thanks for all the help and if anyone has any more input or suggestions please feel free to let me know.
