TX - Personalized Plate New vs Renewal ?

I don't understand how this works now with "Myplates".

Background - I have had a personalized plate on the 57 for 20 years plus. I bought a personalized plate for the Camaro in April 2010 and paid the outrageous fees of the "Myplates" because I didn't see anyway around it.

Renewal, I just went through the online renewal for the 57 and I was only charged a $40.00 fee noted as "personalized plate fee" on the receipt (as I recall that's what the charge has been for many years). I anticipated having to go through the myplates for the 57.

So, basic question is, can you get a "new" personalized plate with out going through myplates?

when I paid for my new black plate I was told I had to go to myplates and get it transferred over, I was also advised that any "new" personal plates would also have to go to myplates and that DOT would no longer be issuing them, I believe however that they WOULD allow renewals through DOT. So baiscally new personal plates and current personal plate holders wanting to change to the new styles would all have to go to myplates.

I just did a chat session with the people at MyPlates and was told that unless you get one of the state issued specialty group plates, all personalized plates now go through them.

If you just wanted a basic personalized plate on the regular background that TX used to issue them on, it's $195/yr or $495/10yrs now through MyPlates. LINK

My avatar pic is of the 'State of the Arts' plate issued by TX. It cost me $30 for the plate plus $40 for the personalization. So, for $70/year I get personalized plates plus some of that money goes to state programs rather than to the MyPlates company's bottom line.

um....so...

Since this was just a renewal (new windshield sticker only), a new plate was not being issued or requested, I was charged the $40 personalized plate fee only.

Seems like they issue a new metal plate every 5 years, if that's correct,... guess I'll see the full charge, like a new plate, when this comes due.

Does that sound right?

I also didn't realize that the group or sponsor plates were that much cheaper. Definitely the way to go, certainly beats the myplates rip-off!

I should point out that it's $70 per year for the personalized specialty plate plus the annual registration fee for me.

For you, since you have a state issued personalized plate, it was just the $40 personalization fee plus registration fees. I get charged $70 each year because of the personalized State of the Arts organization plate. When my renewal came up last summer, I opted to just get a new plate (when from FUN44 to OTHR1) since it cost me the same whether I kept the existing plate or got a new one.

My assumption is that if/when the state requires you to get a replacement plate, in the future, that they will force you to go through MyPlates.com if it isn't a state specialty plate and just a regular personalized plate. Expect to pay through the nose at that time...

Gotcha! rolnslo,

Thanks for info!

Hey, I'll pay the $70 when due,... but for the $195/yr to myplate, I want more than a plate!

Hot Rod......I have TWO personalized plates.....BOTH of them were issued by teh state BEFORE MyPlates took over......I taked to teh people at DOT about this before my Registration Renewal came up and I was informed that if you had the plate BEFORE MyPlates took over, you were "GRANDFATHERED" in and your fee for the plate you currently have will stay the same. and when both of my renewals came....sure enough....my personalized plate only cost $40/yr.

Okay. I got the letter that my plates through myplates were going to be 195+registration. So I went to txdots website and found one of their plates that i liked. I got the Sam Houston plates with my personalization and it was 135 all together. And that was today.

>>> "GRANDFATHERED"

I take this a being "GRANDFATHERED" forever.

Using badgebunny's number of $135 and what I just paid, I beat myplates out of about $38/yr !

I'll take it!

Just hate getting screwed and not kissed.

When you purchase a plate off of myplates.com and decided to keep the plate for the ten year option it brings your plate cost to $59.50 + your regular renewal fees you pay already. My question for yall is do you have to pay myplates.com the full $595.00 when you order them the first time? Cuz if you divide the $595.00 by 10 it leaves you with $59.50. If you pay for them over the next ten years then its reasonable but if they ask for the full amount up front then I got some saving up to do...lol

I'm confused on their URL. Isn't the proper URL: www.myplates.com/ourmarkup.htm ?

Luckily I got my plates grandfathered in just before all this myplates process was activated. I almost held out for 7 digits but luckily decided to "settle" for ROCKIT and am now very happy.
