Should I drain some? Maybe a little too much oil

I didnt realize I was on the last quart of oil and put the entire 6th bottle in without checking the level. After letting the engine run the level is around A and B on the picture below. Should I drain some? I'm thinking a half a quart too much.

Yea, I would... I think there's a risk of busting some seals. Just unscrew it enough for the oil to drain around the plug... If you take the plug out, all the weight will push all that oil out and you might make a huge mess.

I've heard testimony both ways.... some say that draining the excess (overfill) is the way to go, others say that the engineers included some extra space just for that reason. Mostly because of the quick lube places and such that people use.

I have seen this topic get alot of attention on other sites, and then some engineer comes on and says wait a minute, they are designed for the occasional 1/2 qt overfill.

the engine should be ok but I am sure this is bugging you so, get under the car, unscrew the oil filter, empty it, put it back on. 5 minutes and be done. Less messy and easy to do as opposed to unscrewing the drain plug and the oil just gushes out and you hurry and try to get the frigging plug back on and sometimes end up having to add oil again because you drained too much! I know!

I know nothing on the RS..But the SS/RS says 8 quarts, so is his RS only a V-6? and thats why camaroc5 only uses 6 quarts as per question. I filled mine with 7 qts,ran the motor, pulled dipstick and marked with a dremal tool then Added the last (8)qt and did the same. This way I can monitior oil consumtion at each fill up between marks

sooooo you get a new dipstick for each oil change?

how do you tell the difference between the markings from 2 oil changes ago and the current one?

yeah, that is over kill IMHO but everyone is different. The dipstick already has marks and so what if there is a little consumption, it is normal. As long as the oil level reads between the 2 marks, it is good! No need for special marks.

I marked the back side of the dipstick at 7 and 8 qts...8 quarts will Always Be 8 Quarts, doesn't matter if it change 1 or change 30.Its an aircraft mechanic thing that was Ingrained into me. Consumtion is normal but to much can lead to other issues and I'd rather be safe then be going "Oh Shit" where did it go?

FYI - Our SS's are screw in underneath, but the V-6 is on top and oil will not drain from it when you remove it.

I had the V6 version last year and traded it in for an SS May of 2010.

I'd say that level 'B' on your diagram is fine. If its all the way up to 'A', I would remove a bit to be on the safe side.

The risk you run with too much oil is the crankshaft touching the surface of the oil in the pan... this will whip it into foam rendering it useless - and before long you'll be needing a new engine.

If he has a V6 then there is nothing wrong with using 6 qt. Perhaps he is confused between quarts and liters.

I could have sworn the V6 I had last year took 6 quarts, but maybe I am wrong...

i think it's a great idea...i did it on my harley cause the level was really hard to see on the chrome dipstick.
