m6 Trans full after 3.5 quarts ?

ok so i did a trans fluid change today and the book says the tranny takes 4.5 quarts of fluid.tranny start to flow out the fill plug at 4 qts. lost a good amount as i was not prepared for it overflow yet. i pluged it, let car run for about 10 min then check the lvl again and i was still full. where did i go wrong.

FYI i used a pump to put fluid in and was on a lvl surface

You can only change a 2/3rds to 3/4ths at a time. So, to fully change the transmission fluid, you need to drain it, refill it, drive it about 3 miles to mix it up, repeat, repeat, etc.

You will never change it all out completely. But close enough.
