8 speed automatics

With talk of upcoming 8-speeds going in to future Challengers, I'm wondering why a muscle car would need 8 gears? Is it strictly for fuel economy, because extra shifting will slow 0-60 and 1/4 miles times. Then there's more complexity and cost. I remember when autos were 3 speed for decades!

Its possible that someday soon all automatics will be variable speed with no shifting, and manuals are gone for good.

with some of the manual automatics out there than can shift in the low millisecond range 0-60's and quarters will drop. I wouldn't mind having one in a nice sports car/muscle car with paddle shifters to "stay in control". That and 8 speeds would be nice if the gearing were good for performance on the low end and fuel economy in 8th.
