need some direction - lowering my car

I would like to lower my car about 1" or so. I have absolutley no idea how to do it. Do I have to buy new springs? are they something I can install? Sorry this is new territory for me.

Odd answer

Yes you need new drop springs and there are a number of good mfgs to choose from. Will help the looks and handling. Do a search on lowering springs and read away

GM stock suspension does not support the power and/or potential of the Camaro.. Suspension upgrade is a must...

A quality set of lowering springs will lower your car and contribute to improved handling. If you have any mechanical ability you can probably install lowering springs but you will need an alignment afterward. Depending on your budget I would look at either BMR 1 inch springs or Pfadt 1.25 inch springs. Both will give you the stance and handling you are after without impacting ride quality too much. If you have any questions or I can be of any assistance feel free to shoot me a PM.

I just purchased a nice package from BMR. Lee is a nice guy and answered all my questions. I am having my Chevy dealer do the install.

Welcome to the Camaro5 community!

Your Camaro has four struts. This picture shows the front struts.

You can see the coils are integrated into the assembly. The coils set the height of the car. Most people refer to the hydraulic component as a 'shock absorber'. That is not accurate. The coil is the shock absorber. The hydraulic component controls the rate at which the coil expands and contracts.

The coils are loaded which is another way of saying they are compressed. You have to exercise caution when taking them apart. If you do not have a coil compressor in your home tool kit you can take them down to the local auto parts shop and for a small fee they will swap out your coils.

For those of us who have donme suspension work the 5th Gen is a straight forward project. If this is your first time, just take your time and set aside the weekend. If it iss more than you want to bite off, send me your zip code and I'll help you select a quality shop to do the work. You have a number of choices for lowering coils and most of the vendors will visit your thread. Before you buy anything I suggest you read 5th Suspension -- THE BOOK.

And they ALMOST got it right. With a few tweaks here and there, it's considerably better.

The Pedders lowering coil springs are not the cheapest but they are very high qaulity and lowers the car 1"-1.25" for a great stance and there is no cutting of the bump stops as they are designed to work as the OEM.Like Pete said above if you take your time you can do the install at home if you have a jack, jack stands and a few tools, but you will still need to have the car aligned and the bushings timed. If you need anything or questions on the parts or install feel free to ask I will be more than happy to help. Here is a pic of a car with the Pedders springs installed.

Lowering is next for me too. I think it makes the car look nicer with a small 1 inch drop.

How low is the car in Red? What are the size and offsets of the rear wheels? And amount of Camber on front? =D

I saw the videos of that car... amazing. Taking those corners like a pro.
