Brake Caliper "wheels"

Has anyone noticed that the 2011 SS has 4 little "wheels" attached to the brake assembly on the front wheels? My uncle's 2010 doesn't have them, but mine does. Any thoughts on what they're there for?

We refer to them as "roller skates" They where placed on the calipers to dampen some high frequency sounds from the brembos. Early builds have weights later builds have the "skates".

And from my personal experience- the "Skates" don't work. But in theory, like he said it was to make the Brembo's quieter.

Ever watch ultimate factories? Check out the episode on Porsche. As the 911's come across the assembly line, check out the "skates" on their Brembo's as well.

I hope every diehard Camaro owner has a copy of Ultimate Factories: Camaro... I bought mine, it may only be just shy of an hour, but totally worth having.

These weights are actually on the pads, not the calipers. You can get rid of them by changing the pads over to aftermarket or ceramic. I have a set of pads that I will be using for the winter when I get my 18" wheel and snow tire combo.

But, if you replace the pads, you could end up with a brake squeal...so they say.

Water is wet. The Sky is blue. High performance brake pads dust and squeal.

The function of the roller skates is to add mass to the caliper assembly and reduce noise. The same was true of the stick on wheel weights prior to the roller skates. You can search other brand forums that use high performance Brembo brakes and you will find similar stories of owners that do not like the squeal.

We have tested more cars than I can remember with OE brakes on a road course. Some of them fail in less than two laps. The brakes on an SS did remarkably well in our base car testing. We think GM struck an excellant balance between performance, dust and quiet.

18s means road course, or autocross as a rule. They do not make street pads, but they make great track pads. Colbalt Friction XR1 front and XR3 rear are the perfect pads for track use with OE SS calipers. IMO

I know this is an old thread but has anyone ever just cut these off? Any issues with doing that?
