I feel your pain. I see things I buy in markets; buyers, sellers and in the middle. The product your looking for might be in a "sellers market". Priced on demand. We are free to buy what makes us happy!!!! lol

I felt the same way when I had my 96 Corvette, and had to get parts for it. Because it is for a 'vette it's automatically over priced.

Just wondered if you were going to be a victim of supply and demand raping.

It's probably not that they cost so much to make per unit, but its the lack of demand or the small market that actually pushes the price up. My company makes highly specialized software intended for a very thin, vertical market. The fact that this market is so thin AND we limit the number of licenses we sell each year keeps the cost of our software high. The same is probably true alot of after market car parts.

I know the company you're speaking of, and the newly released wheel studs you're talking about too. Have you seen how expensive the lug nuts are?!?!? That might drive you over the edge!!! Yes, they are crazy expensive, but as I see it, these pieces were developed for the dedicated track car that needs specialty studs and nuts. Maybe they're made of a harder metal, I don't know. I'm not trying to justify it, I do think they are overpriced (for what they are). I just don't think they are for the daily driver guy on the street who is trying to make some wheels fit.
I was one of the people involved in the discussion on the longer GM wheel studs. The GM Part Number is 11588810. But just be advised, this wheel stud is only about 6-7mm longer than the OEM stud. The "other" studs that are so expensive are about 90mm long and allow a spacer up to 15mm I believe, so they are definitely for a specialty market. So, look up the 11588810 if the extra 6-7mm will fit your needs. I know that Dorman Products also makes their own version of the 11588810 that is even cheaper (I think their part number is 610-428? maybe). Hope this helps!!! |

Shane,
There is some reason the studs cost more than normal, at least. The 14mm x 1.5 stud is new to the performance market, having only been used on fullsize SUV's and trucks before. Most of the previous GM performance cars still use the 12mm x 1.5 thread, which is more common now. I remember when the 12mm studs first came out, they were also expensive. Now they are cheap due to production numbers. In time, the 14mm studs will come down in price (hopefully). But you are correct, nothing keeps you from drilling the holes to fit the 1/2" studs or bigger.
