Just one question about production

This has been bugging me, i want to buy a camaro SS this year, but wont be able to order until i secure a job(coming out of college in may). right now it seams that i wont get an SS till october at the earliest even if i ordered right now. Anyways, they say they need to sell 100,000 camaros a year to be profitable. Yet somehow they cant get the 11,000 preorders done till october? How the hell could they ever sell 100,000 cars a year if they cant even make 11,000 in six moths??? Honestly do they plan to have 80,000 V6's sittin on the lots while people still wait for v8's in september or october? are they saying V8s wont be on lots even 6 months after production starts...i know thats not the case with challengers. Im just frustrated because the second i get a job secured I'll order, but if thats not untill april or may i guess im screwed. Anyone wanna shed some light on this? I really was hoping to be able to have one by the end of summer

I just emailed my dealer/salesmen. He seems to be in the know, and he works at the #1 corvette dealership in Louisiana. Once I get word from him on my 2SS, I'll be sure to post it here. My questions to him were, when is production date, was it delayed, and when could he estimate when I can pick up my car.

So why not order NOW, get it guarantee'd at the current pre-sold prices and avoid any future price increases, and get all the pre-sold order perks?

For one they are starting the production of a brand new car, they will start slowly and build up to that 100,000 a year number if the demand is there.. see that is it, they don't know yet what the demand will be after all the pre sold cars are made. as soon as they know that i am sure production will be like any normal order, that is 6 to 8 weeks from order to delivery.

BTW, I can't really buy until Jan. but I will want it ordered the way I want it. In your best guess, when should I order? I know it's hard to say but you have the experience with the dealer end.

Also, if you could guess, would I be in worse shape waiting? As far as price and such? Gotta pay off my wifes Lexus. will be done in Jan. Got 16k left on it. Don't really want two car notes because I don't want to slow the pace I'm paying hers off. Hers started at 42k but if I will be paying more anyway with an MSRP mark-up then I would order now. Hers started Sept 07' I'm way out in front but will have to weigh ordering early with the added interest on hers by slowing the payoff with a new note.

I guess i could pre-order one now. but i would feel uncomfortable ordering one before I even get a job, and it would be hard for me(mentally) to cancel the order if i didnt have a job before it came. Im in Mechanical Engineering, and its supposed to be a better field then alot to be in right now...but still, ive only gotten a few interviews and no offers yet. The day i get a job offer im placing an order.....

Dude, hopefully you'll secure a job, just be patient. I am worried, Im in the same spot like you, except I am in my second semester of my second year in college. When I get out of college and when I secure a job, Im going to wait a year to save all I can and then purchase a Camaro. Thats the plan, lets see how it works out.

What exactly are the perks other than the early order code on the order form and the packet GM mails to you?

Scott,

I see you work at a dealership. There seems to be alot of opinions on this forum about when production starts. Have you heard anything? I'm new at this website, and seems alot of information in these forums are from miss informed individuals and it is a load of BS. Please shed some light for me.

It is a huge dilema...pre-order, or wait...I'm in the same spot. I want to pre-order so that I can lock in the price, but i'm not sure if i will be "financially ready" to purchase the car. If I wait, I'm afraid that the dealers will get greedy and try to shake me down for as much as they can. CDBiker, I don't want to rain on your parade, but do you have a plan on how you will purchase the car coming out of college (Saving up $ for down payment? How much you will be able to afford to pay each month, etc.?) Make sure you are ready for the purchase, or as CamaroScotty eluded to, "refundable deposits"...

Well, i have a 98 Z28 ill sell before i take delivery so thats about 6-7k for a down payment, plus ill be living with some friends any paying less than 200/month rent, and i have no other bills other than insurance and phone. Insurance I already had quoted around 130/month. Plus most any engineering job i've seen is in the 50k+ range, and most of my classmates that have gotten an job so far are starting at 55k-60k. So i think i can pull off paying for it, considering all i spend any money on is cars, dirtbikes and necessities. Just gotta land a job really....

What dealership? Hood in Covington, LA? I just found out today I got bumped from number 9 to number 3. They have 3 SS allocated. I was stoked!
