My car is eating oil?

A couple weeks ago, my "add engine oil" light came on. I have changed the oil every 2 to 3 thousand. I stopped at a shop and it was 3 quarts low?? I took it to the dealer and they told me I forgot to add the oil the last time it was changed. ( I THINK NOT) Well, for a fee of course, they changed the oil for me and told me to come back in 1000 miles for an oil consumption check.
I just took it there this morning and it has burned a little over 2 quarts in a 1000 miles!! I have a 69 vette that doesnt do that. I asked them how they repair it and I was told that they have to contact the technical people as there is no service bulletin for this on the Camaro.
They than told me that there is a diverter (in the pan?) that they add or if that doesnt work, they do a tear down of the engine and put in new pistons? Is anyone else having this problem? I am suppose to take my car in monday and leave it. They said they have no idea how long it will be there and they will help with a rental. The last time I got a little Hyundai, that was weird. Please let me know if you guys know how I should go about this.

Doesn't your car have the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty and the 5 years on the drivetrain? It should be covered under warranty.

I have over 56,000 miles on mine and I check it before and after I change the oil and I haven't noticed any loss. I have a little in my catch can, but not noticeable on the stick.

OP What engine do you have? I know that guys are putting catch cans on theirs because of all of the oil that is being sucked in via the PCV system

I got the 1 SS 6.2 I have 21,000 miles on it. I got the 5 year warranty with it an it will be covered or there will be problems. The dealer told me that they have not heard of this problem with the Camaros yet.

I'm just worried that if they dig into the motor, it will stat having more problems

... Isn't that quite a bit of oil being consumed?

Sounds like someone else needs to take theirs to a dealer, too.

I'm wondering, are there owners who dont check their oil every few fill ups? There are oil consumption issues and if the motor is run with the oil 3 qts or so low there will be excess piston/ring/cylinder wear due to the low level. Unlike the lifters, bearings, rockers, etc. that are fed via oil galleys and oil pressure...the pistons are lubricated by oil splashing onto the cylinder bores from under the pistons through the oil rings and if the motor is run low enough there is not much reaching where it needs to.

I can't imagine owning a car, any car, and not checking oil on a regular basis but I'm in my mid 50's and come from the do-it-yourself generation (as well as 35 years of building race & performance engines).

You may have a faulty baffel under your valley cover that is allowing excess oil into the PCV system. The catch can (a good effective one like the Elite, Mike Norris, RX) will trap this before it causes issues in the intake and combustion chambers, but it sounds like you have a deeper issue.

Keep us updated.

Dealer wont touch it. Probably a valley cover or valve cover issue, I've just been too lazy to do anything about it. Doesnt hurt anything. All a catch can does is keep it from being burned off, doesnt fix or solve any problem. (not that they are bad to have) I go through plugs fast enough that I dont even really care.

I've got 26K on my L99, and it only burns the small amount that ends up in the catch can. I've never had to add any between oil changes.

As far as being worried about them tearing into the engine, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. As long as they do it right and fix your problem, you're getting a fresh TBO (time between overhauls) at their expense.

Somehow posted that again, sorry. We will see what the dealer says on monday. As far as checking the oil, I change it at either 2 or 3 thousand miles. I really never thought about a car like this going through that much oil.

Its just a bummer, and if they change the pistons like they said, who knows how long that will take.
