Pre-ordering vs. Waiting

Okay everyone please be patient with this post, it's my first. I have been reading the posts on this site for a while. I was wondering what are the advantages of preordering your car as opposed to waiting to get one once they are at the dealer. I understand by preordering you get exactly what you want in your car. Will it be cheaper to preorder(MSRP) or will you get a better deal by waiting. Also how much do you have to put down to hold your order? I don't mind preordering the car even if the delivery date is later this year or early next year so getting one before "everybody else" doesn't matter much to me. I'd appreciate any help because I really want this car and I don't want to be hasty, but I don't want to miss out either. Thanks everyone.

1st and foremost Chevy has said they intend to fill all pre-orders by October. That given as a date to complete the 12k pre-orders, your wait until a dealer has one that actually fits what you want will most likely be after that.

2nd, all pre-orders are price protected from any increases during the model year. Will there be any? Who knows, but at least you'd be safe from them.

The pre-orders I'm taking now are for the 4th quarter of 2009, or Oct 1st or later. My allocation is filled. The pre-orders are price protected until it arrives, whenever that may be. Be sure to get a REFUNDABLE deposit - I am hearing some real horror stories the last few days!

Like others have said Pre orders will be price protected at least on the MSRP.
I would look around if I was going to place my preorder and find someone with allocation left and that will put it in writing that you will get the car at MSRP OR LESS...

advantages of waiting would be more exterior options(colors), Hud, convertable, seeing them in person...just to name a few.

Edit.. Welcome to the site!

*rumor has it if you preorder before Mar 16th you will get the current msrp introductory price.
*If you find a dealer that still has allotments left, you will get your camaro before october.
* changes of a dealer getting a lot car in exactly the way you want is slim

Why is "allocation" an issue - if you want the car LATER, then place an order with someone who doesn't - those will be Q4 cars.

I am looking to take delivery in September...My deposit is down already, but my dealership stated we should wait to place the order so it does not arrive before September...should I order the Black 2SS/RS now??? My dealer has allocations left according to him....Looking for some advice. I changed to the 2SS/RS so disreguard my sign on name.

I bought my SS2 from the oldest Chevy dealer in the U.S. according to him, average delivery on any ordered GM car is 12 weeks... He also said they believe the early increased lag time on the Camaro's has been a GM decision to keep costs down by not running plants for only part of a shift and waited until there was enough "en cue" to keep the line moving quickly... that could be total bullshit, but he admitted its just what he's heard through the grape vine and that full production is underway so its POSSIBLE, since i used the last of his 12 allocations i could see it before 12 weeks...

Im not holding my breath. im thinking more in the 16-18week range is realistic at this point.

The Camaro is the only car GM is building that it actually has orders for. They're jamming these cars out now.

One dealer I went to wanted 2,000.00 down, i went to another whom I ordered from and that dealer wanted 500.00 down, but that was a nonrefundable 500.00. These were just to order. I've got the paperwork filled out, so the price should be locked in. I hope.
