Speaker Crackling with ipod

Has anyone had any trouble with Crackling in speakers with ipod touch. It happens when I listen to it for awhile. It starts out quiet and gets worse pretty quickly. After a few minutes it gets really bad and gets to the point where it's muffled and sounds like under water. It immediately quits when I switch to another source like XM or FM radio. The weird part is that if I shut it off for awhile and listen to something else and then go back to the ipod later it works fine again for awhile. I'm using a third generation ipod touch plugged in to the Usb with original cable. My next step is to try a different cable. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

i haven't checked into this but it could be something... maybe the volume is too high on the iPod itself? not sure if the volume bar is even there when used thru the USB but something to check. You should be using the car volume to control it, if it is jacked up on the iPod could cause some disturbances... just an idea

I'm having the same problem with my iPhone 3GS. Every minute or so it crackles. Most of the time it plays fine. But every once in a while it crackles about once a minute. This is through the USB interface. The phone does warn me "This accessory [the car!] is not optimized for use with iPhone" and something about possible poor sound quality.

Yeah the volume on the ipod is the first thing I thought of too but it just says "accessory connected" no way to adjust. I could try turning it down and then plugging it in. Also mine doesn't crackle every minute or so. It doesn't crackle at all at first and then after listening for some time it starts and doesn't quit. It gets so bad usually have to turn it off within a minute or so. Thought maybe amp was getting hot or something but when you switch sources it quits. When I first heard it it was just center speaker and I thought it was blown. Then it moved to tweeters and door speakers. I'm gonna try playing the ipod in my home theater with the dock connection and see if it's the ipod. I normally listen to it through the headphone jack with no problems.

I had this happen to me on the way to the Fest last week. I'm using an iPhone4 and it took about an hour or two before it started. It didn't happen on the way back home???

What version hardware/software is your PDIM?

While in USB mode, press and hold the Menu button to display the version on the radio LCD.

What iOS version is your iPod Touch running?

Have the exact same problem. Using an iPod Classic 80 GB. After playing for more than an hour or so it starts crackling really bad. I just reach into the center console, pull the USB plug out and plug it back in, and its fixed. Can do it while driving as you just need to feel around for it.

Will go to the dealer on my next service and ask for a warranty claim. Anything you guys recommend I should tell the dealer to get it replaced?

For those having this issue: have you been in to or have you spoken with your dealership yet? Also, have any of you spoken with our Customer Assistance team as well? I would also like to speak with our Technical Assistance team on this issue as well. Thank you for your time.

Hello, Finally a service rep on the forums! This issue and a couple of other issues with the PDIM have been discussed at length on the forums, and the general request/wish is for a Service Bulletin on replacing the PDIM with the latest part No - 20985421 (DB/DB). This new PDIM fixes all the issues addressed.

Here's a link to the longest thread (I think), just going through it should give you an idea about the magnitude of the problem.

I had the exact same problem with my iPod Classic.

It would start to crackle more and more as time went on. Un-plugging and reconnecting always made the noise go away.

Then I figured out that if I turn the iPod on before I plug it in, the crackling never happens.

Weird.

Mine does that every once in a while both on the iPhone and iPod Touch. I just unplug the device and plug it back in and it usually goes away and doesnt come back.

The most that I do know about the issue is that the newest module for the PDIM system is for the 2011 models only and is not being installed in the 2010 models. I will have to check with our Technical Assistance team (as I stated above) to see what if any fix we might have for this issue. I should have something before the end of the week for you.
