Why 0-60 and not 1/4 mile?

I've noticed when many people compare acceleration times between two vehicles they focus on 0-60 and ignore 1/4 mile. I think both are equally important and always compare both.

I realize modern muscle cars are capable of getting well above legal speeds in the 1/4, but I don't think I've ever found myself in a race that ended before 60mph, except against a few ricers.

So why all the attention on 0-60?

(mods if this is in the wrong section, please move it, thanks)

the manufacturer doesn't generally publish 1/4 times. Until the car hit's the street 0-60 is about the only comparision you can get. The Mag times are generally way off in the 1/4.

Perhaps its because 0-60 is an industry standard metric for comparison purposes. I would suspect that more people run their car 0-60 as fast as possible than those that would ever drag on the street or even go to a drag strip.

This one is easy. 0-60 is what more people will feel. Most don't drive over 80 or 90 mph but EVERYONE likes to feel the acceleration. That's what a good 0-60 gives you. A great acceleration feel.

I have to agree, everyone is going to feel this getting on the freeway ( except for those fools who like to stop at the end of the onramp )

A lot of people might not even get their car much above that, unless you live here in CA. where the normal speed limit on the highway is 80-90 in the slow lane....

I can't wait to see some real numbers on the SS, I actually found test numbers a while back on Edmunds but I have no idea where they could have gotten them since there aren't any cars for them to test....

0-60 4.9 sec
1/4 mi 13.4 @ 108mph
skid pad .90g
60-0 117 ft

I'll have to see if I can find the link, these numbers are just written down on my folder that I keep with all my Camaro info, but I got them from the Edmunds.com site a while back ....but since this info was printed Chevy has revised the hp rating on the Camaro and done a lot more work to it as well so I don't put much, if any stock in these numbers.

Maybe they just don't want us racing the 1/4 on the street to find out how fast our car really is ?

We can do 0-60 getting on the freeway though ....

Easy way to compare our cars....

2010 Chevy Camaro SS: 0-60 in 4.6 Seconds
Date posted: 07-21-2008

STORY TOOLS Digg this!
del.icio.us

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — GM engineers at today's official 2010 Chevrolet Camaro unveil were all too willing to provide performance numbers for their hot, new muscle car, including quarter-mile and 0-60-mph times.

Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for GM's North American rear-wheel-drive platform and owner of a first-generation Camaro convertible, was pleased to run through his baby's accomplishments.

According to Oppenheiser, the new 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6-equipped Camaro will run from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds regardless of transmission choice. The V6 coupe will cover the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds with an auto and 14.7 seconds with a manual, both at 97 mph. The brakes don't sound quite as impressive, though, as Oppenheiser said the base Camaro stops from 60 to zero mph in 132 feet.

Not surprisingly, the V8-equipped Camaro SS delivers better numbers across the board. Chevy's Camaro SS outfitted with the 422-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 six-speed manual hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and runs a 13.4-second quarter-mile at 108 mph according to Oppenheiser. Strangely enough, Oppenheiser also claims that the automatic-equipped SS Camaro, which is rated at 400 hp, runs from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds. "We optimized the shift points," he said.

Both versions of the V8 Camaro SS pull a maximum 0.90 g on the skid pad. Four-piston Brembo brakes help stop the Camaro SS in 117 feet.

This is the article in question. It is dated July of 2008, changes have been made to the car, don't get your panties in a bunch people !!! Besides, is that 1/4 second really going to make a difference ???

Like I said, it's old info !!!

Most likely been updated with the update in horsepower !

Relax , chill, we don't have REAL numbers yet ! It's all make believe until they make a production car and test it. Let some of the car magazines get their hand on them and see what they test out at, not what Chevy tells us they test at.... I think Chevy is going to tell us what we want to hear, the magazines will give us something closer to the truth, just make sure to read them all, not just one.....

I expect we'll be getting some crappy rag' reviews in the next month or so. I'll save my impressions until Evan Smith, Scott Parker, or one of the other MM&FF or GMHTP driver takes hold. THOSE, will be good times. I can't see why the rags' insist on not even powershifting manual cars. Whatever...

Not that we really have any hard numbers on the camaro, in the February 09 edition of Motor Trend the g8 gxp ran a 4.5 0-60 and a 13.0 1/4 mile...so i would expect the camaro to do the same if not better...seeing as the cars have an almost identical drivetrain

Maybe I'm wrong but it's maybe coz 0-60 mph = 0 -100 kmh which our standard in the rest of the world.

However, I should calculate but the 1/4 mile isn't even close to our 1km.
