Painting uethane GFX Kits

I bought the Street Scene kit from Stillen a while back and was just able to get it into the shop for paint/install. The issue was pin holes that appeared after the 1st sealer coat was applied. This resulted in the painter to have to fill and sand the pieces multiple time to get it a smooth finish. The finished product now looks amazing, but at a huge labor cost to me. Is this most likely the result of a poor molding of the material or something else. Not sure if the type of sealer he used could cause this, but he's pretty good and has done body kits numerous times and has never seen one this bad. Any ideas?

Did he spray it first with an adhesion promoter ? That needs to be done first on plastics and urethane before the sealer/primer thats what my paint guy does. Its called fisheye I believe its usually caused by improper prepping/cleaning and he could have used some fisheye preventer....I got the following off a paint website.

Problem: A "fish eye" appears.


Solution: What's a "fish eye"? A small, white dot, surrounded by a ring of paint — caused when paint for various reasons will not stick to the surface. Fish eye is most often caused by a spot of oil, grease or wax on the surface. The best way to prevent it is to clean the surface well before painting. If you spot a fish eye in your finish:

Stop your work. Let the paint dry as is for at least 24 hours.

Sand the surface with #400 or finer grit sandpaper until the fish eye is gone and the primer coat appears. Clean the surface well with alcohol and begin the painting process again.

Note: The best method to counter this is to pre-clean the surface well before you begin. This will stop it before it starts.

Yeah thanks, he did use adhesion promoter after cleaning the pieces several times as there was quite a bit of mold release on the pieces. I'm pretty sure he used the correct processes, just maybe the parts were more contaminated than usual? Like I said, the finished product is awesome, just took a lot of dollars for some reason to get it there. Just wondering if this is highly unusual for urethane.

it looks like a contaminated surface. you shouldnt have to pay to fix the painters mistakes, he should have preped and cleaned the surface better. takes less time to do it right the first time than to fix it after the aplication of the sealer.

It does happen, but he should have pre-baked the part before he did anything, that way the RA evaporates out of the part. It is time consuming (booth time) but not a labor issue. And like others have said it should have been pre-cleaned & prepped. Sound like maybe they sanded the part before cleaning and before pre-baking. new parts still have "gasses' in the pours. You probably paid for the learning experience - but did they learn anything.

We've painted and instaleld dozens of SS parts. We have never seen one look like that. It looks more like air line contamination. Those parts aren't known to outgas like that and if the prep was done right, shouldn't even have 1% of that visable sovent pop. Good luck. Looks like a re-paint though.
