Temporary fix for 'tonneau" cover cover rub marks.

I don't know why, but I don't have much faith in GM coming up with a good solution to this in a timely manner. I'm not going to use this for now because I want them to see the rub marks at the dealer ship every time they look at the other rub marks. When I took my car to the dealership to look at all the marks they pretty much told me these wear marks were normal, but two on the sides were not. I was thinking a using a microfiber towel between the cover and the top would prevent these. GM should have a replacement cover with a soft underside so that this wouldn't be a problem. If you do not have the more pronounced side marks I would use this towel method to prevent the cover marks. I wanted to have my wife go ahead and sew the microfiber towel to the back of the cover but I'll wait to see what GM does about it first.

In the pictures you can see the wear marks on the back of the cover, the wear marks on the canvas top and my temporary microfiber towel fix.

I'm doing the same thing, using the roof/tonneau cover as designed by GM. My fear is I baby/protect it the point where they say there isn't a problem.

Right! Do we go to great lengths to protect it so that there are no rub marks - but then, we might not get the fix?

Hmmm... hope we will get a fix whether or not we have the marks.

I am doing the same thing with a piece of black fleece. It does not leave the lint that the towel does and a half yard of it covers the entire top. As for attaching it to the cover I thought of this also but right now the friction between the fleece and the tonneau is lower than the friction between the fleece and the top therefore any movement that occurs is between the fleece and the tonneau. I would rather wear out a $3 piece of fleece than my top. Although I am hoping for a better resolution from GM I think I will do my best to protect my top in case a proper fix is not forth coming. I will add a picture of this tomorrow. I also treated it with the 303 product mentioned in another thread and it seems to have helped.

Im GOING to do.something similar once they get the sides fixed and I get a replacement top... BUT- until then- Ride it as I bought it so GM can fix all their problems, I didn't pay $42k to rig my own fixes into a brand new car!!!!

These are the pictures I promised of what I am doing. It take an extra minute when I put the top down but I have seen no further degradation of my top since I started doing this.

That's a great idea and much better than my towel. I like how you said it rub is between the fleece and boot cover, not the fleece and the canvas top like if I were to attach the boot cover. I'm gonna run by the fabric store to have it ready for mt new top.

How big of a piece of fleece did you get? I'm getting my new top put on today and want to keep the rub marks from the tonneau off of this one..

thanks

1/2 yard. $2.50 at a local fabric store. Get a color to match your top.

Dealership said that GM is not doing anything about this. They called it "normal wear".
