Smile How On This Green Earth Do You Remove The Rear Seat Back?

Greetings All,

Yesterday I was installing the rear back-up camera. I got the rear seat cushion out but no matter what I tried I couldn't get the rear seat back out. I looked online and I looked in the service manual and I still couldn't figure it out. The service manual says push back the seat back locks and I did that, but then there is this black plastic retainer that will not let you remove it. No matter what I did that black plastic retainer would not budge. So what am I missing here? Am I really that unintelligent??

Thanks,
Gene.

It is a complete pain in the ass. You have to push the latch back on each side and pull the seat out an angle. It's definitely easier with 2 people but, can be done by yourself. If I can do it, you can do it. It may take you a lot of frustration, sweat, and swearing but, keep at it and you'll figure it out.

I think you're smarter than me, lol. I swear to god I spent over an hour trying to get it out. I was soaked from sweating and I still never got it out. Like I said, the latch locks went back fine, but there was these black retainers wrapped around the outer rod/peg and they would not allow the seat back to come out. I wanted to change out the rear speakers some time but I guess until I get this figured out I won't be able to!

I used a pair of long nosed vise grips to hold the retainer clip back so that I could get one side out at a time. Hope that helps.

Are you talking about the black plastic piece? I couldn't get that to budge.

Last time I took the rear of the seat off, had to have the seat folded down, I think the pins have flat sides on them, and the seat has to be folded down so it will come out. (Along with having the latch unlocked) Don't remember any plastic pieces. Will check again tomorrow afternoon if the above description doesn't work for you. Guess they could have changed the design! Or I am having a CRS attack

Yes the seat has to be flat on top of the back seat bottom, then you have to try and move those damn plastic clips out of the way. The best way is by doing one at a time. Keep at it dude, you'll get it.

I used a flat tip screwdriver to rotate the plastic clip while pivoting the backseat to get the right position for the clip. The seat came right out, once those clips were in the right position.

The upper part of the rear seat doesnt need to come out to install anything. Just lower it and you're fine.
The lower part of the seat comes out very easy. Just lift the front edge till it unlatches, then push down on the ear part of the seat until those come unlatched. Then the thing just lifts out.

To get the rear deck lid off without the trim scratching everything all to hell or vice versa, it's just a better plan to remove the rear seat. Some people can work on electrical outlets and panels while live with little to no issue as well, but, it's just a good idea to turn off the juice.

+1...this is always a hassle when removing it by yourself.

Attached is a poor quality pic of the latch, sorry, and it moves backwards. It is the gray metal latch in the pic. Once it is moved backwards attach the long nose vise grips to keep it out of the way. Yes, the seat has to be folded down in order to remove the seat from each side. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all of the posts guys. I did see and push the latches rearward as well as having the seat folded down. It is these plastic clips that are the issue. I even tried with a screwdriver and couldn't move them. I guess I have to give it a try again!

Move the plastic clip with the screwdriver while pivoting the seat at the same time. The clip will rotate with the seat, then hold the clip in place with the screwdriver as you rotate the seat back. I had a hard time too. The trick is moving the clip with the seat rotation. You'll be surprised, it works!
