How much damage can speed bumps actually cause?

Hey guys I know it's a stupid question , but after reading some threads about guys bending control arms and other suspension equipment while performing seemingly mundane tasks I had to ask this question.

I think speed bumps are probably one of the most common "obstacles" everyone encounters, so how much harm can they do? By the way, I talking about hitting them at the recommended speed or lower, obviously if you hit one at 80mph that's the end of discussion.

I started hitting some low ones around my house around 15-20mph with no scraping or drama whatsoever. However, can such an activity cause frame distortion?

So yea just those two questions. Thanks guys.

I would suggest hitting dips and speed bumps with caution.

Definitely, I'm all for that. But do you think 15-20 is TOO fast, even if I don't scrape?

I don't know about frame damage, but hitting them at higher speeds would probably wear your shocks/struts quicker than usual.

What kind of speed bumps are we talking about though? The really skinny ones that instantly bump you up and down, or the speed humps that are wider.

Speed humps I'd say 15mph is fine. Those skinny ones I wouldn't take any quicker than 5mph. On a funny side note, I had a friend take one of those skinny speed bumps at like 30mph in a Camry with 3 people in the car (fun day )

Yea I was talking about the wide ones. That's what I figured, the ones by me are about 2in in height. I was asking about frame distortion because I read an article claimingthat speed bumps may cause the frame to bend, but I'm sure they meant if you hit one going 80 and the shocks totally compressed and forced the frame up.

And as for the skinny ones, I used to lease a Jeep and catapult off them lol. I really didn't care. My SS on the other hand I own, so yea...... I'm trying to be careful.

You're forgetting that speed bumps are there for the purpose of SLOWING YOU THE F**K DOWN. That said, you don't have to crawl over them but you do need to slow down and take them easily. That goes for any vehicle that youre in.

My past car a 92 Suburu legacy, with 14" wheels could go over speed bumps without slowing down, I kid you not, even in the supermarket parking lot, I actually loved that car, too bad I sold it, now I am looking for another one as a winter beater and to save mileage on my baby, 10,000 miles in 4 months exactly, ouch.
