carb Jeep: Drove great yesterday, won't start today. Gets spark and gas- any ideas?

Checked for spark, spark is good. Killed a battery and melted a starter solenoid trying to get it to start. replaced both. It has gas going to the carb- unhooked gas line and let it shoot at me. looking in from top of carb, gas is going in when I pump it.

If I hold down the gas when I try to start it (after pumping it a few times) it sounds like it wants to start, and will give me a few turns after the starter stops, but it never roars to life. My neighbor agrees that it sounds like its starving for fuel, but you can see the fuel going into the carb. I pulled apart the carb, cleaned everything, replaced gaskets and seals.

Wouldn't do anything more than normal when I tried starter fluid.

Any idea what I should try? should I replace plugs and stuff just in case?

It started up and ran perfectly until today though, so thats why I'm real confused.

Its an 80 CJ7 straight 6 5 spd manual . I asked this on the jeep forum and got no response??

Thanks!

I also swapped the body for a C2 Z28. (In short I traded it for three cars, a Corvette Z06r, a C2 Camaro Z28, and a Cadillac CTS Summer Performance package 3.6L DI with Aisin 6spd.)

Sounds almost like a timing issue to me but I haven't really worked on cars that much since 1987.

Perhaps the distributer came loose. I have actually had that happen on my 72 Nova. The bolt came loose and spun the distributer around.

Pull the plugs! They will tell you what you need to know.

How does it sound like a timing issue? (not doubting, just curious). Distributor appears to be distributing spark OK , I tested a few plugs, each getting spark.

What should I look for? Pulled a few and they didn't look fouled or anything- no buildup. Getting spark at the plugs? No oil/liquid. they are dry?

Just throwing out possibilities for elimination based on my less than extensive knowledge of High School auto mechanics class.

The basics:

Fuel
Spark
Air
Timing

You already pretty much eliminated Fuel and Spark and air.

Makes sense. Timing is the one part of cars I don't really get either. Maybe its time to call in a professional... haha...

I'm wondering if something crazy might be going on though... like a blockage in the intake manifold? I know its unlikely, but still. I guess I can further research the timing situation. its hard to comprehend what could be wrong with timing if you didn't change anything though, right?

Interesting... It looks like I jumped a tooth or two on the timing chain. Pat yourself on the back Cristoff!
