stall converter issues?

So for a while now everytime I start my car up its shakin a little bit and making a loud noise from under the car. Also when im driving it the car feels like it has no power and its wasting more gas aswell. I took it to a trusted mechanic and he got under the car and opened a little hole and he said the stall converter was shaking and said it will need to be replaced. Does this normally happen on these cars? Or can something else be the problem?
