GM Employee Discount

About to trade in my 1LT/RS for a 2SS/RS and wanted to know some more info on the GM discount.

The loan will be solely in my name, but My dad is a GM retiree and I believe he gets the GM discount. First off, how much is it? (and if it's based off the value of the new car purchased, that is $36k for the 2SS) and secondly, can I use that for my purchase (pretty sure it can be handed off to the family members also)

Now, one thing my dad mentioned about this employee/retiree discount is that no money is lost by the dealer. The discount comes straight from GM so the extra $$ off isn't affected by the dealer. Is this true?

The reason I ask is that I haven't brought this issue up to the sales manager as I'm waiting to get a final number (they are already $4k off the 2SS). I just want to be prepared for a reaction like this from him when I bring up the GM discount: "Oh no sir, we have already taken off $4000 on the new 2SS and given you top dollar for your trade ins." In that instance, I would call BS and tell him that the $2k discount (or whatever it is) doesn't come out of your pocket.

Hopefully someone can help me out. Thanks

Its not a discount off the car. It is a set price. So if the MSRP was lets say 38k and they are giving you 4k off.... you will not get the entire GM discount... they dont stack is what im trying to say. I have the GM Supplier discount and went through the same thing, months of research and phone calls I went throught before I figured all this out lol. Deffinately doesnt hurt to ask. However invoice price (or $1k off invoice) is probably the best they will do untill the 2012s come out of it has been sitting on the lot.

How it works is GM will give the Dealer a number for a car...lets say 34k now if you have Supplier or Employee discount, all GM does is tell the dealer that GM will take the hit for the price to 33k or w.e they dont say 1k off of whatever price you agree on...if that makes sense. PM me for more info I went through all of this and like I said months of research before I got mine for invoice price....which was $300 less than my GM Supplier discount.

EDIT: Wow long post..lol Simplified version..... It is not a "Employees get $2k off" its a Employees get it for 2K off MSRP (or whatever it actually is), if the dealer gives the customer a discount of 2K...then the "Employee discount" is meaningless.

I'm pretty that is how the deal is so long as the car is ordered and not sitting on the dealer lot. When I was looking at buying the dealers I went to wouldn't do an employee discount for cars in stock but would if I ordered from the factory. The reasoning I was given was that GM would take the hit on a ordered car and not the dealer would take the hit on a car that was already delivered to them. Don't quote me all this though, I don't know the entire ins and outs of the discount process.

I got the GM discount because I work for a GM dealer. It wasn't a lot,around $800.

you get the GM employee discount if its on the lot or ordered. But the discount is off the sticker price not on top of other discounts offered. However if you order it, the discount is off the final number includes all upgrades/mods you choose.

I bought the 2SS with all the options, taxes and freight is was 52K once the discount was applied, + the GM $1000 off rebate I paid 46K.

**you get to take advantage of any GM offers + the GM employee discount. If you are ordering the car you get the GM offer at time of ordering and at time of payment (if there is a new program between the two dates).

Maybe to clarify - A GM Employee buys at the Preferred Price and then
receives an additional rebate. In the case of a Camaro coupe, preferred
pricing saves roughly $1000 from MSRP. An employee would then get a
rebate of $1000. The Camaro convertible rebate for an employee is $250.
The same discount applies if the car is purchased off the lot or ordered.
I hope that helps.

I had two discounts for cars on the lot - the GM Supplier Discount and the Costco Member Price. I went to several dealers using each to negotiate and actually got a better price than both of those. It was only $150 better, but I'll take it.

No dealer ever said I had to order to get the discount.

A festival car is a different type of unit, not a NEW vehicle in GM's eyes. It's classified as a special event vehicle and not eligible for GM Emp discount.

thx for the help everyone

from what i'm understanding, since the dealer has already taken $4k off MSRP (MSRP was $40,800 and the price i'm getting is $36,777) then I wouldn't be able to get an additional GM employee discount?

Is that correct?

It's not as good as it was a year and a half ago, but it can still be nice if you are having problems with a local dealer who are not dealing. Currently, Preferred pricing is what the GM Employee discount is based on as stated by Becky. The easiest thing to do is to create and account and login www.gmfamilyfirst.com. You can build your car and get your employee price directly from there and you can also get the Authorization Number for the dealer also. Yes you can get this pricing if you are family member of a retired GM employee.

What I would suggest is get this employee price number in your hand, then go to the local dealer to see if you can get better prices WITHOUT it. If the local dealer is not dealing, just tell him you would like to do GMS. Without using GMS prices, you will be able to use the GM credit card's bonus money if you have one of these cards.

I too am a GM Family member, and I was looking at upgrading my 1SS for a 2SS. My dealer has one that has a sticker of 39,330. GM Family Preferred price is 38530 plus an additional 1000 off making it 37530. If you have yours discounted 4k go with that and run with it.

MSRP of 40.8K, then the vehicle is pretty loaded 2SS. $4K off MSRP is just about right, I don't think you will get better prices with Employee prices. It never hurt to double check with gmfamilyfirst.
