MPD1 transformation of the "BS Express"

Yes, its the Brad Smith Express! Cant believe Indiana gave him that plate

This thread will cover the install of a MPD1 "Z Force" ram air hood, the MPD1 rear spoiler, a Razzi ground effects kit, and a Heritage grill all done to show quality specs. Also we will be doing some orange rally stripes. This will be done for the Hare Chevy meet. I have to space this project out for the next couple of weeks while I build parts and work on tooling for a couple of new camaro hoods.
I had Brad come in two weeks ago for the preliminary fitting of the hood and spoiler. This allows the hood to truly cure after being exposed to sun and engine heat. I noticed that on new Corvettes you could see the framework of the hoods "ghosting" through years ago so I would never try to do a show quality paint job without this curing process on a fiberglass part.
I went around all the edges and sanded and adjusted the gap untill it was about 1/32" wider than my paint stick. About the most I took off was 1/32' at any point. After that I sanded the edges to round them. This leaves a nice rolled edge rather than sharp lines.
Then I put some 80 grit on my sanding blocks and worked it fairly smooth. Followed that up with 120 grit and made sure all the 80 grit marks were gone. After that i went over it with 120 grit on a DA sander. I also went around the bottom underside edges. The MPD1 hoods are finished on the edges with a slight bevel so the edge does not appear to be thick. This bevel is worked in to the surrounding area with a DA sander and 120.grit paper so by the time we are done no seam will be visible. Flipped it over, blew it off with a air hose and rubbing with a paper towel and shot three coats of 2K primer on it. With f/g "airing" the part off helps reduce static electricity.
Next I guide coated the spoiler with some cheap rattle can black primer and blocked with 80 and then 120 grit paper.

Looks great, I'm still thinking of that force five hood. A front spoiler wouldn't look too bad either.

No I had in laws in so I wasn't able to make it. I sure would have liked to go but the thought of being on the bad side of the wife just didn't set too well.

After the hood was primed I gave it a day in the sun then blocked it out with 120 and lightly reprimed.

Moved on to fitting the Razzi kit next. I installed the rear hanging ledges as per the razzi directions and then adjusted each side untill they were close to the directions. Marked them with tape and installed the side ledges slightly below the tape line. On the front I spent some time making the edges all fit nice. The sides were perfect and the rear just needed a couple of spots sanded for a good fit. Sanded them all with some 180 to get some of the forming marks out and then coated them with Dupont variprime for adhesion. Then I used Valspar "Flex Black" and put 3 coats of that on.

After what seems likes 8 hours block sanding the primer on the razzi kit I put one coat of Southern Polyurethanes epoxy primer for sealer then base and clear. I am using PPG DBC basecoat with 2 wet coats of Southern Polyurethanes Universal ( SPI ) high solids clear. This is a awesome clear for these parts as it requires no flex additive. Seriously you can bend it on a test panel almost 180 degrees with out it cracking.

Next I sanded the underside of the hood with 320 grit on a DA sander then hand sanded all the corners. Then I sealed the topside with 2 coats of SPI epoxy and after it set for a day I flipped it over and did the same on the underside. Then I masked all the openings so they would stay blacked out. Lightly scuffed the underside and did the base/clear.

Brad came over and removed the front fascia so we could install the heritage grill. Does he look confused?

Next, after mounting the hood, I got it all masked and painted the hood on blending on to the top of the fenders and front fascia. I shot 2 coats of DBC 500 base clear on so I could lightly sand the base before laying out the stripes. I didnt bother to put any base clear where the stripes are going to be.

While that is setting up I mixed our stripe color. It is a combo of House of Color (HOK) PBC 30 sunrise pearl and PBC 31 sunset pearl mixed 1 to 1 ratio. The can in the front is the mix of the two behind it. This color should look blazin hot! Time to wet sand the hood so I can do the strip layout.

Look confused? I think I was done at that point! Well except putting the inner fender and the wheels back on.

Too bad the pics don't do the color justice. The sun really brings out the color.
