Manual Transmission fluid...

Okay, im starting to get pretty pissed here. All i want to do is change my manual transmission fluid (2011 SS manual) The manual says "manual transmission fluid" (GM part No. U.S. 88861800).

I cant seem to find anyone else who makes it besides GM. I have called two dealers and they both say I have to use the GM fluid, I find that hard to believe.

So what can i use without voiding my warranty or something? I dont want to use the GM fluid because my transmission is very loud, clunky and clattery (i took it in and they said nothing was wrong with it). I had a similar issue with the rear end and changing to mobile 1 fixed it right up, I would like similar results with my transmission.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

does that comply with the specifications of the GM part number? I dont want to have any warranty issues on account of this.

I looked at mobile 1's website (they were my first choice because i love them) and i didn't see the part number on there.

NOTHING but the GM fluid will meet the spec BUT Mobil 1 Synthetic Multi-Car formula will work better than the stock fluid. It is a Dexron 3 based fluid and would be spec for older GM products.

Do not get the DEX VI one that is spec'd for newer GM vehicles. It is not synthetic and does not have the right performance to work in this tranny.

Will using the mobil 1 synthetic void my warranty?

DEX6 can in fact be made with a group III synthetic base. But, the base stock could be a group II and group III semi-synthetic base. DEX6 is the thinnest tranny fluid on the market. That would be a better reason as to why GM says not to run it in a manual tranny or transfer case.

Seems like it would be an issue. Both dealers said so and it only makes sense that it would.

That said, I had what I would describe as "nibbles" during shifting especially when cold. No problems other than poor shifting quality. The M1 fluid helped reduce that to an acceptable level. I tried this a year and a half ago and the difference was obvious. No question in my mind that it was a good call for my situation.

If you have other (bigger) problems, you might want to play it safe and stick with the GM stuff. It will not be questioned for warranty purposes.

True but I do not believe M1 makes DEX 6 in synthetic. I was just trying to prevent anyone from reading the label on the bottle at the store and thinking they were buying the wrong version of M1. The sticker will throw you off because it looks like you are buying the wrong fluid. They might grab the DEX 6 non-synthetic version that is specified for current production GM vehicle (automatic) transmissions. That would be a bad choice.

I used redline manual transmission fluid 4.2 quarts... Best out there! But that my opinion.

I noticed at difference right away... Shifting is a lot smoother!!

I'd say go with redline!!!

Redline d4 ATF is the best available, same color and smell as the gm fluid.

FYI: i have been talking to both royal purple and amsoil via e mail regarding whether their transmission fluids will void the warranty. The Royal purple rep (btw, royal purple has amazing customer service) said if strict warranty compliance is what I'm looking for, that I shouldn't go with Royal Purple. He also stated stated that their oil is much better than the GM oil.

The folks at AMSOIL got back to me much later than royal purple did and with much less of a personal touch. That being said, they said their Multi Vehicle ATF replaces gm part number 88861800 and that it would not void the warranty.

Redline or Royal Purple for drive train lubricants. They are top notch.

read my post on page 6 and 7

redline = void warranty

I asked about mobile 1 and he said if its not GM we wont cover the transmission under warranty.
