Paid leave on military orders as a civilian?

I'm medically retired from the Marine Corps and have military orders to report for a medical appt in Jacksonville, FL in September. My employer has a leave program and gives paid time off to reservists called to active duty and also to training, but doesn't say anything about my situation. They also provide paid time off for jury duty.

After speaking to someone in my HR dept who said my situation qualified, I submitted my orders and was denied. The supervisor of employee services basically said it doesn't qualify because it's a doctor appt. What they're missing is the fact that it's official military orders from the US government. I have no choice in the matter; I must go.

Does anyone know of any law stating that they must honor the orders and give me paid time off? I don't get how jury duty is okay, but a required by law medical appt has to come out of my own personal leave or sick leave.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Those policies are completely up to the company.

Look up USERRA law - it may fit in there somewhere. I don't know that law inside and out, but it covers deployment of reservists and how the regular employers must handle it. It might apply somehow.
