Good MAF vs. Bad MAF..the Dyno Test @ MarylandSpeed

We had a customer come in today who wanted to dyno his Camaro. His mods were a CAI intake, ADM Scoop, Solo High flow cats, and I *think* a Borla catback. It also had a mail order tune from another vendor...which we did not touch. He had been experiencing bucking, and realized he had the so called "bad" MAF with the single letter. He wanted to buy a new one for us, so I threw in some extra dyno runs to see what happened before and after. The end results are in the graph below.

We did two runs on the stock "bad" MAF sensor, followed by 3 with the new "good" sensor. The customer had been running with the CAI lid off..which I am thinking contributed to run 1 being a little higher. The rest of the runs were run with the lid on. As you can see..it is basically the same car with either MAF. There was no difference outside the margin of error for the dyno...aside from a little roughness up top..where the car may be pulling spark.

Now to understand why the car is the same, you have to understand why the "bad" MAF is bad. Basically, it does not react as fast to incoming airflow as the newer one. That being said, it still reacts plenty fast for both the stock, and most traditional "bent" elbow intakes. Where you run into an issue is with an intake like Vararam that places the MAF right in front of the throttle body. Then the shower reaction time is exposed. Now the true test here will be when the customer reports back if his bucking is gone. If it is not, then the issue was obviously not the MAF. Either way..I thought it would be a neat little comparison to look at.

Like I said, the first and best run did not have the lid on the cai intake. Also it was warm humid so the car was def hot. I don't think the results are different enough to show either way.

Don't Know ?

I had a weak MAF sensor & finally changed it out for a strong one.Noticed right away that the sometime erratic idle at start up seemed to improve greatly. All I have is a CAI for add ons so I dont know ?????? Worth the money ???

Now this is good info

So you were dynoing with the hood open? I know that doesn't change the MAF sensor comparison, more curious about the CAI lid being on or off since the car has a scoop.
