Is the GT500 built by Ford or an aftermarket tuner??

Can someone answer this for me? I keep reading references to the Mustang GT500 being Ford's top dawg Mustang but when I go to Ford.com I don't see it listed under the Mustang link nor the ability to build or buy one.

If not actually built by Ford (In house) is it really a worthy competitor to the Chevy built SS? If that’s the case let’s hope someone like Lingenfelter starts building something "special" too.

I believe it is built by Ford in Romeo, Michigan north of Detroit.

Every GT500 is assembled at Ford's Romeo, Michigan, plant by a single technician who signs his handiwork.

It is a shelby. The cars are sent to the shelby factory in las vegas and they are built. I believe all shelby gt500's are built there. They actualy offer tours of the factory. If you are a car guy it is really worth seeing

AFAIK the 500 is in house, the 500KR is outsourced.

The 2010 Mustang Shelby 500 is an SVT in house project, I believe.

The GT500 is Built right at the same plant as all the other Mustangs in Flat Rock. Alliance Manufacturing, which also builds Mazdas.

Gee!, (he asks feigning amazement) why are you askingthis on a Camaro Board?

I have been in the shop (2 years ago) where they finish off the vehicles. The GT 500KR, is done at the Shelby facility in Las Vegas, I believe.

So Ford builds the Mustang...but the heart and soul is Shelby?

To me, that seems no different than Hennessey or Lingenfelter.

Shelby (the company) makes the GT500...Ford makes it's "blank canvas."

My previous post was vague. The GT500 motor is hand-assembled by hand in Romeo, Michigan.
The GT500 Mustang is built in Flatrock at the Mazda facility.

KR is shipped to Vegas, correct

Wow, so much misinformation in this thread. Let me clarify things for those who have no idea what they are talking about (which seems to be a majority of the people posting in this thread):

1) The GT500 is built on the exact same production line as every other Mustang. That would be the Auto Alliance International facility in Flat Rock, Michigan.

2) The 5.4L engines are hand-assembled at Ford's Romeo engine facility and then shipped to AAI to be installed in the GT500.

3) The cars are NOT built by Ford and Shelby. SVT designed and engineered the vehicle as the replacement vehicle for the '03-'04 Cobras of the previous generation. The internal name for the car was "Condor". The cars would have been produced as Cobra's if not for the fact that Ford and Shelby reconciled their past issues and, as a brilliant marketing move, struck a deal by which the "Condor" would wear Shelby's name and GT500 moniker instead of being released as a "Cobra" Mustang.

4) GT500's never see Carroll Shelby's Las Vegas facility and not one part on the GT500's is anything other than what is produced by Ford Motor Company.

5) GT500's are not tuned by Shelby, they are calibrated by Ford just like every other Mustang produced.

greenrail and garagelogic are correct.....The GT500 is a Ford Factory product built in Flat Rock, Michigan with the engine built in the Romeo plant...

The GT500 is a Ford Vehicle designed largely by Ford SVT, and branded with the Carrol Shelby name for marketing and retro fanfare.

The following are the actual "Shelby" Mustangs that start out as regular factory Mustang GTs and GT500s and get shipped to Vegas for modification at Shelby's facilities:

Shelby GT
Shelby GT-H
GT500 Super Snake
GT500 KR

http://www.ford.com/about-ford/news-...ild-2009-27929

Quoted from the link above:

"Each Shelby GT500KR begins life as a GT500, built at AutoAlliance International Inc., in Flat Rock, Mich. From there, the cars are shipped to the Shelby Automobile facility in Las Vegas, where a Ford Racing Performance Pack, exhaust system and short-throw shifter are installed. The GT500KR also is fitted with unique body, chassis and interior components. Every GT500KR will be hand customized and delivered to each customer in an enclosed transporter, just like the legendary Ford GT."
