Car show rant

On Sunday August 28th, I entered a local car show. Beautiful day, highs in the 70's, light breeze..ahhhhhhh.

Anyway, 203 cars were entered into this particular car show. $15.00 registration fee each car.

At 4:00 P.M. the time came for the awards. The awards were standard for a car show; top 75, 10 best of catagories, 3 motorcycle awards, 1 Mayor's award and 1 Best of show.

After all was handed out, not one Modern car one!!!!

The modern cars entered were: 7 Mustangs, 2 Challengers and 1 (my) Camaro 2SS/RS

The name of the car club sponsoring the car show was Ky Klassics Car Club.

Now, we all know that there is a large contingent of folks who believe that a car show is/was and always should be Classic or antique vehicle's, and that more and more car shows are adding Modern vehicles as a seperate judgeable class.

Now here is where the rant begins. I am not pissed that my Camaro didn't win. However at least 2 of the Mustangs should have won. Both had cams, visually nice superchargers, and custom paintjobs, easily putting their vehicle's worth around $60,000 if not more. 1 of the Challengers had some cosmetic mods including custom paint job.

Before anyone asks about the visual aspects of the classic cars that won, I will tell you this. Most of them were very deserving. Several were 68, 69 Camaro's etc. But, for an example there was a 64 Mustang, decent shape, but had rusting rocker panels. One 69 Camaro in front of me (Yellow/Black) had SS badges front and rear, and he even told me himself it was not an SS, he just slapped the badging on there.

To put this more into perspective, there was a base model, stock 89 Mustang behind me. It had been taken care of, but the original blue paint was faded, the engine compartment dirty, and overall nothing special.

It was absolutely clear that this particular car club was not going to award a thing to a modern car. And honestly that is fine, if that is what they want to do (remember, they have the word Klassics in their name).

However, I feel that, A. Post it in the advertisement they ran in the local newspaper that you will not judge or award a trophy to modern cars...and B. don't accept the $15.00 dollar registration fee that was paid by me and the 9 other modern cars there. They pocketed $150.00 from 10 of us that they had no intentions of awarding a trophy to.

Again, so that it is understood, I am not pissed that I didn't win, but I can tell you that 2 of the Mustangs and 1 of the Challengers definately deserved to win.

I do believe that my Camaro should not be judged equally with a 68, 69 Camaro, because quite simply, mine is not in the same class as a very well cared for and fully resored 69 Camaro. Therefore, I do not even look at the Best GM catagory, or Best Ford Catagory etc. going to a modern car, and honestly it shouldn't. But, either have a seperate catagory such as Best Modern, or do not accept the fee from a modern car if you choose not to consider any award for it!!!!

Rant over, carry on!!!

Well spoken i completely agree. If there is no modern muscle class why did they take money from you . You just wanted to park your car rightful so on the lawn to show off how beautiful it is. I admire your honest nature in saying a mustang and other are far above your car. And how you can not compare them to classic cars well said. They should have had a modern muscle car group just cause its Klassic or how ever it is spelled lol. Don't mean that the modern muscle don't hold a place most car clubs like that well GOOD ones. Do there man focus on classics but also show others love something that big of an event. With that meny awards is stupid not to have a modern muscle car award.

With all that said i am glad you at least had a good time i love going to car shows and showing off nightfall.

P.S When i go to car shows and lose i am sad alittle mad and disappointed. Its just my competitive nature. But in truth i know there is cars far outside my own and i am ok with that. I wish i had money to make a true show car but eh what ever. I go to car shows for a good time show off my car and talk with other car people. Its what car shows are there for but i think judges are all bias anyways never take the time to look over cars talk to owners. They just pick a shiny one or one they wish they could own and hand them an award. IMO and to the camaro owners who do win great you deserve it and i am happy for you and not trying to take anything from your victory. . But that is not always the case and not from what i seen in my car show experiences.

Shame on the club who hosted the show for not including the future. The shows around here that I attend that are judged generally have a class for everything...including imports.

With that said: If I am entered into an all Camaro class, or even an ALL Muscle class, I will feel horrible winning an award over a car that somebody lovingly restored in his/her garage. I respect the classics and the work that goes into them more than I ever will a piece of plastic and fake marble with a name on it.

If this is an annual show, talk to the organizers about adding a Modern Muscle class for next years event.

I've been going to shows for more than 20 years now. Sorry to say that most are rigged anyway. Yep, I have seen it first hand from the judges side of the table. It's one of the reasons I will never join a car club or enter a club sponsored car show.

Before those who run clubs jump on me, this is my experience and I'm sure that all of you are above board.

Go to the show for the love of cars and to appreciate all of the vehicles there. If you're going for a meaningless trophy, you've already set yourself up for FAIL.

This has been an issue for a number of members. IF you enter a car show that is JUDGED by the car club that is putting on the show.....you can bet there will be some bias. The people are NOT professional judges.....they will award trophies to whjat THEY like....not what is the best. IF it truely makes a difference to you....only enter shows which have PROFESSIONAL JUDGING done by someone who is NOT part of the club. Its OK if they have a "PEOPLE"s CHOICE" award, but it seems as theough the show you attended was nothing more than a FUN MEET with trophies given out by the public.

I agree, I entered a car show a few weeks ago, The add said all car car show mordern and classic. so I went with my brother he has a 68 gto.. This had no catagories just top 40, there was only like 120 cars there... with that said you would no believe how many people said the car is to new and dose not count? One guy asked me why would I bring a modern car there as most people worked hard rebuilding theres and thats what make it a proper car to take to a show! All I said was well If i went and bought a 69 camaro from someone that was perfect and did not work on it myself (just said I Did) would that count? He said no. then i asked him how do you know all these people here did not do just that? he walked away. I think of it this way. There are many ways to pour
your blood and sweat into somthing.. I worked every weekend and holiday for 3 yrs to save the money for this car.. so I worked just as hard as any who rebuilt there's, maybe even more. I could have bought a nice 69 z28 (needed a litlle work) but i chose this one. no payment no money owed all because I had a goal to save the money when I first heard it was coming back out, Just because it is old and someone said they did the work dose not mean they are not lieing.. On a good note I went to one back in may and one 1st place so they are not all biased. Some people just are ignorent in there beliefs. I also asked him were his car was in the car show he said he did not have one. I was like oh, well see ya later.

I've been restoring antique cars for many years. IMO new cars should never expect to compete with 30-40-50-60-70 year old cars. Most people don't know what goes into restoring &/or maintaining a classic car. Unless there's a "modern muscle" class you should go to a car show to have fun enjoy the day.
Again just my opinion.

I do know what it take's and chose a different path. been there done that

If I bought one of your cars restored would it count? I do agree with the modern class but a all car car show is just that - all cars

Well said. Your better off at shows with a 5th Gen class or modern.

Been to many shows

Most shows state the classes that will be judged,
around here in S Jersey many shows are adding a modern muscle
class to thier shows I won 2 with my 2010 SS/RS and 1 with my 2012
Mustang GT I entered on my way home from the dealer with temp tags still in the rear window. I have a 70 Monte and have been to many shows with it
winning numerous awards, after the first year it became less meaningful
the trophys sit in the trunk or garage and are forgoten, now I go to enjoy the chance to talk and hang with other car nuts.
I have judged plenty of show and some owners are totaly insane when it comes to trophys, arguments, fights, etc. One guy even gave me a bunch of $#1+ because I didn't pick his car he said the one I picked was a piece of $#it We call them trophy hounds.

The one on the right is mine

Yes it would count. My 60 year old Oldsmobile (that I restored from the ground up myself) takes constant maintance and care. If you buy it now you would need to know where to get maintance parts and how to repair anything that might go wrong or need replacement. It's a totally different ball game. There's just no comparing owning my new SS and a true antique car.
On a side note I have gotten trophies for my Camaro but always in a 5th gen or modern muscle class.
Don't want to argue here- Just my opinion from someone who rides on both sides of the road.

Ky Klassics Car Club

Should have been your first clue as to what type of car would win. I love the Gen5 Camaro, but a Classic it is not....YET! IMHO it definitely will be in say 30 years.

Sorry you had that experience though!!
