Camshaft Replacement

Do the heads have to be removed to access the lifters on an LS3? Or can you get to them just by removing the intake manifold? I plan on changing the cam for a high perfomance one and was just curious. Thanks

no need not even the intake. But you do in most cases need new valve springs.

Well first you must remove the caneuter value and then remove the Flux capacitor and then the camshaft should be no problem getting to.

For cam replacement: Pull the rockers, rotate the cam once and remove. The lifters hang in place. For lifter replacement, head removal is necessary. And yes, make sure you change springs to match the cam (which can be done without head removal)

Thanks, I thought the lifters would drop down once the cam shaft was removed.

he's talking about the lifters DURING a cam swap. if you have to pull the heads. in this case, you do.

they can. ive done a few LS camswaps where we just spun the cam and the lifters pop up into the retainers and "stick" there. then you can pull the cam.

now if you are swapping the lifters, then you need to pull the heads

here's a shot of the lifters in the retainer

Just don't let them sit for too long or they can fall down.
