OUOUO!! I have a question??

Greeting All

As a fire fighter we are always looking at car and thinking if I hade to get some out how would I do this? A question came up the other day about the camaro's. The question was given to me do to the fact that I own a 2010 2LT RS IBM. But this question was more for the convertible owners and the question was what safety featchers does the convertible have installed in case of a roll over? Is it equipped with a pop up roll cage or is the A post (Is the post were the windshield is)
Reinforced so that it will hold the car up in case of a roll over? I did not have an answer so here I am trying to find the answer out for my department. Can anyone answer this question? Other than the kid in the back corner with the oh! look! something shinny!

No roll bars just the reinforced A pillar. As far as I know.

No roll bar on mine...there are decorative bars but I don't remember seeing any truly functional from the aftermarket crew yet other than for the coupe in racing.

I don't think they need to put one on a vert. when you roll on a vert your chances of walking out alive are pretty slim IMO. no offense to Vert guys.

People die on hard top reinforced roof cars. I could only imagine worst on verts since they don't have any sort of protection on the roof at all incase the car rolls.

The A pillar is reinforced. That's it ! Seen a few that have had custom roll bars installed on verts striped for race.
Bottom line is "Keep the shiny side up !"

Pop up roll cage? Never heard of such a thing, sounds like a good way to decapitate someone. Since you mentioned it, I did some searching and apparently such a systen is offered on the Volvo C70 and Jaguar XK. If deployed with the top up it shatters the rear window, which probably happens anyway if you roll over.

I can't be certain I'm up to date on this issue, but as far as I know federal motor vehicle safety specifications have roll-over protection requirements but convertibles are exempt.

The best mitigation of roll-over risks I can offer, on the basis of general engineering principles, is that convertibles are generally found on passenger vehicles with relatively low centers of gravity, and as such they are less prone to roll-over accidents. At any speed, the maximum traction the tires can produce in a situation where the vehicle is sliding sideways is not enough to induce roll-over.

Of course, striking an obstruction while sliding sideways, a slide down an incline or certain impact situations can induce roll-over on any vehicle.

I think you just have to bear in mind that it's an inherent risk with any convertible.

It has an ejection seat. It shoots you up just as the roll begins and the parachute with jet thrusters and steering allow you to safely negotiate the landing. Of course, this is a $500,000 option. The pop up roll cage was too expensive.

As mentioned previously, the hydrofromed tube in the A-pillars and an inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header appear to be the extent of roll-over protection.

On my 2012 window sticker (which I can't find right now), I'm pretty sure it claimed 5 stars for rollover. Probably due to the low center of gravity.

The specific regulation for NHTSA upon which a vehicle would be rated for what the OP is asking about is FMVSS 216 which is discussed here:

http://www.nhtsa.gov/DOT/NHTSA/Rulem...Final_Rule.pdf

I did some more searching around through NHTSA and you're right, for some reason the Camaro convertible DID get a 5-star rollover rating which makes no sense because convertibles are exempt, and frontal and side impact ratings aren't rated yet.

http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shop...MARO&year=2011

When I looked further into it, apparently it is related to a dynamic test where the result was that there was no tip and it was rated as an 8.7% chance of rollover. The test that is performed is a swerving maneuver.

http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shop...?vehicleId=207

The 5-star rollover rating has to do with vehicle dynamics, not roof crush resistance.
