Now I have a Top Problem

I've been lucky so far with no rub spots but I also have not used the top that much. Went to get my first oil change from the dealership (it was free). Got ready to go back out driving again and the top will not go down. The windows go down but then the motor just whines but nothing happens. Checked to make sure the slide thing in the trunk was set correctly and it was. Any ideas of what else I should check? I plan to take it to the dealer of course but it's just going to be a little while as there is no convienent time at the moment and I'd like to troubleshoot it myself first.

Are you dgetting any kind of message/warning on your DIC?
Are you sure the top is fully released from the windshield?
Is your trunk closed.

Thanks for the reply.

It just says "Top is not secure."
It appears to be fully released...I turn it 90 degress and you can feel it release.
Trunk is closed.

I've looked online and cannot find anyone else with this problem.

Top is not secure means either the trunk is open or the latch is not securely set. Unhook the back latch then hook it back up.

Make sure that you not only turn the release handle all the way, but also push up on the top right at the windshield to confirm it's loose from the windshield.

Are you talking about the glow in the dark release?

No, there is a holder in the trunk that comes out. The holder has to be in the slots in order for the convertible top to go down. I found out the hard way because I had just went to the grocery store to pick some stuff up, moved this holder, then after I unloaded groceries try putting the top down.

After I got the error I played around for about 30 minutes until I figured it out, lol.

+1, make sure the cover thingy in the trunk is like the manual says, which I believe is pulled all the way OUT and rod is resting in the holders on each side of the trunk. Exact way opposite you might think, I thought for sure it should be rolled up when the top goes down to make room, but not so! I think GM/Chevy did this to be sure nothing is in the trunk when the top comes down - don't want to break that very expensive back window. As always, use your best judgement :-o!

I thought you meant some other latch. I know about the cover thing in the trunk, it's where it is supposed to be. The roof does lift up on the right side after I unlatch it.

Any other suggestions? I guess I do have a problem...drats!

Sorry about that. If one side is working and the other is not - yes, a problem.

You just answered your own question. Sounds like the left latch stayed locked.

after the top is unlatched, you should be able to push up in the center and make sure the top is free and clear of the windshield on both sides.

Yes the 'shade' in the trunk needs to be pulled all the way back and hooked in the two slots on each side.

The shade is made to make sure you don't have too much in the trunk and not leave enough room for the top to go down.

If the cargo cover in the trunk is not in place, the top motor will not whine when you attempt to move the top. You will just get an error message in the DIC.

As SUX2BU and OrangeVert mentioned, one of the two latches is not releasing properly. Other than taking it to the dealer which I would recommend, you can try pushing down on the top of the roof at the windshield on the left side at the same time someone turns the release handle to open, then closed, then open again. Possible that it might release the latch, but not likely.

Good luck with it, and hope the problem gets resolved soon.

The top lifts up on both sides when released....I just mentioned the right because an earlier post said push up on the right.

UPDATE: Thanks for all the suggestions. Must be the good karma from this site but the top works perfectly every time now. I have no idea what it was but no problems now at all. Love this car!
