Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 aces Germany's most famous track

A 2012 Camaro ZL1 has proved to be king of the 'ring. The car managed to skid through the 12.9 miles of Germany's famous Nurburgring race track in a mere 7 minutes, 41.27 seconds.

That's about 40 seconds faster than a Camaro SS tested at the legendary German track in 2009. Check out the video, all seven minutes of it, for a thrill ride.

The Camaro ZL1 used for the lap was a production-intent model, with no performance modifications, driven by Camaro Performance Engineer Aaron Link. Drive On got a look at it in a rain storm in Hawthorne, Calif., outside Los Angeles this week. GM has taken it on tour.

More than 30% of the Camaro SS was re-engineered for the Camaro ZL1, which arrives at U.S. dealerships in the first quarter of 2012.

The Camaro ZL1 has a supercharged 6.2-liter engine rated at 580 horsepower, making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever.
