Paint Bowtie on 2012 Steering Wheel

Has anyone painted the bowtie on the new 2012 steering wheel yet? I'm thinking about slapping some CFM on it, but since it's a steering wheel and not just an external bowtie that can be removed I'm a little nervous!

Instead of being smooth like the exterior bowties, the gold center is covered with little bumps. Should I tape everything off and spray it or should I try and brush it on there? Here is a pic for reference:

Why not get vinyl ? Seems more practical to me than paint.

Well, the problem with vinyl is the texture of the gold part of the bowtie. You can kind of see in the photo the rows of tiny bumps...

its just like the bowtie on the key fob. vinyl isnt going to stick very well to it. no idea about painting it.

Oh yeah! I just noticed that it's the same style. I wish someone would paint theirs first... Isn't that the point of a forum, to learn from other people's mistakes???

I have the same hesitation to do the same thing on mine. I think paint would work fine, but it would then be permanent....not a huge ordeal, but being able to reverse modifications is always a good thing IMHO.

Vinyl isnt going to work at all with the texture. It'll stick for awhile, but it wont have the best adhesion and probably will peel off over time.

What you will have to do is basically melt the bow tie (be extremely careful) to where it is a complete flat surface then paint over it.

I'm fairly confident about modding and stubborn enough to do everything myself, but there's no way I'd ever be comfortable enough to do that!

Does that part of the steering wheel come off without the air bag?

Seems like this would be one of those things that Chevrolet would want to offer customized/personalized options for. They offer all sorts of ground effects, grilles, stripes, etc.. why not a few different steering wheel centers? They could put a chrome chevrolet emblem, chrome "Camaro" lettering, body colored "Camaro" lettering, "SS", "45th", etc..

Are you wanting to paint the bowtie Carbon Flash Metallic? Will it even show up when you change the color since the area the bowtie is in is pretty dark?
Dunno, but I think I'd opt for the red to match your 45th AE, or a silver color.
Your car. my 2 cents. Good luck!

I'm only going to paint the gold center so the chrome would separate the colors. I was leaning towards CFM because my original plan was to color-match the exterior bowties. But I took the front one off of the heritage grille and I'm going to debadge the rear as well. So now I'm leaning towards either the silver that's on the steering wheel or try and match the white on the interior panels. Although now that you mention it, the red to match the stripe would look pretty good...
