she's not ready for hibernation

for those of us who protect our precious investments in the Winter months...it is appearing all too likely that tomorrow will be the last day on the road for 2011.....at least for me...latest maps have me right in the bullseye for 6-10'' of the white Saturday

I'm dreading that day. I consider my garage the cocoon though. She'll go in there when it snows, get all her mods, and come out better than ever.

I hate this time of year. But on the other hand it gives you something to look forward too.

There are two schools of thought on this

1) drain the oil so the contaminants (sp?) don't sit in the pan all winter

2) change it in the spring after your first startup. that way any condensation that might have gotten in the engine over the winter and built up on the block walls, will be washed away with the oil old, and it won't be in the fresh oil the following season

I subscribe to the second one and have been for over a couple of decades now

why not just start it up two or three times a month and let it run for a few minutes ? that way you keep things from setteling for to long a period of time !

That's just about the worse thing you can, because then you are just creating unwanted condensation in everything from the exhaust system, to the engine and right down to the oil. You would be better off driving it around then having it idle in a garage

Change it before you store, the condensation is formed when you run it but do not heat it enough to burn off the moisture. You want to get rid of any acids formed in the oil during combustion by changing the oil. Then use Sta-Bil marine formula in the fuel, combats the alcohol problem.
