Exclamation AY6 (V6 M6) aftermarket 1st to 2nd gear synchro and blocker ring to fix grind

Any companies want to step up and design a more durable replacement 1st to 2nd gear sychro and blocker ring? One with a carbon friction material instead of brass should alleviate the power shift grind we all seem to have. I would even buy a rebuilt synchro and blocker ring if they were available.

I think there is a big market for this considering it is a design flaw with this transmission and millions of these transmissions are on the road. Can we get some help with this issue, from someone... anyone... pretty please?

At the moment, I just have to shift from 1st to 2nd a split second slower than I'd like to... Gets the job done, but not representative of a true performance car.

GM already has a updated carbon fiber blocking ring for this problem they're just not making a recall for it.

No they haven't. This update was for the V8 guys. Not the AY6. The OP drives a LT1.

I think he means a 1LT refering to the cars trim level, not a LT1 engine.

AMSoil MTG 75w-90 is my solution- perfectly adequate manual trans oil, but its G-4 rated, not the GL-5 called for by GM.

G-5 has more extreme pressure additives for extreme conditions. I don't live in Antartica, and sychro's need just a little friction to do their job.

Try it, you'll like it.

I think I might. How many quarts?

1.9 quarts. I think it was about $15/quart. It's very helpful to get one of those hand pumps that screw into the bottle to get the oil up to fill hole .

So, in lay man's terms, is the GL-4 thicker or less slippery? I'm trying to understand why this helps the grind. Does it help the synchro work faster?

A GL-5 has more extreme pressure additives (6.5% vs 4.0%) than a GL-4.
GL-5 is the highest, extreme condition gear oil currently available.

The EP additives are "antiscuffing" and maintain a thin layer of oil between surfaces whenever possible.

The synchro ring in a manual trans rotates slowly due to frictional torque from a cone clutch. The brass clutch ring gradually causes both gears to rotate at the same speed. When they do spin at the same speed, there is no more torque on the cone clutch and gear engagement occurs. In a modern manual trans this should occur so quickly you hardly notice

This system was designed by Porsche in 1952, before GL-5 was around, or synthetic oil for that matter.

75W-90 is the proper viscosity for our trans and I think GL-5 may offer the best possible fuel mileage- but I also think GL-4 offers better function (its less slippery).

Its not a magic bullet, this is still a clunky trans with alot of room for improvement, but I've had better performance with it.
