Opinion time: To keep or not to keep.. (Rims, not the car!)
As you guys know, this past April I toasted my car to the tune of 10K+ in damage. Rebuilt her and found a matching set of factory rims to replace the two damaged rims I wound up with in the crash.
Well it's down to winter time and I'm in the position to actually put the car away for days at a time. Soon this should turn into a permanent thing. That said with spare parts piling up in my corner of the garage, I'm wondering if it's worth actually keeping my original factory set (two of the rims are untouched). My concern is that the tires on the car are of an unknown age and mileage. BF Goodrich all seasons. Should I just toss the good pair on CL and shred the tires/scrap the two rims? Or should I save the pair, find another pair, and mount all seasons on them since my current set have unidrectional all seasons (Primewell PZ900) and aren't all that grippy. I'm going to make this clear: I WILL NOT BE RACING THIS CAR! EVER! If I'm going to race, it's going to be with a car that will be designed for just that. Not a daily or potential show piece like how I want this car to end up. And.. Go! |

If you like the factory rim look....keep them and buy new tires all the way around. No good reason to gamble on tires that you don't know the age of.

Here's the thing. The Primewells are the 4 on my car, and the 'show set' of factory rims. Currently only have maybe 11K on them? 8-9K of which I put on myself (they still had the color bands on the treads). The Goodriches are on the bad rims. 2 are cracked and trashed, 2 are good. All four Goodriches have healthy tread, hold pressure just fine, but are of an unknown age. They'd go on the DD setup.
Should I reuse the old Goodriches and dig up 2 factory rims for a second set? Or sell the two good rims, scrap the 2 cracked rims, shred the Goodriches that came with the car, and go for something else in the summer? I like the factory look, but also want something different as a second set. Possibly Comp T/A wheels or Firehawk wheels. That second set would be the show set. |

Your idea for the second set sounds like a good one. You could put the money from selling/recycling the rims and tires toward your second set of wheels and tires. Also you have time on your side to be able to save up money until spring/summer comes back around.

Yeah, just tossed 'em up on LS1tech for trade/sale, see if I can get anything out of the good ones. Take those and the other parts I've pulled off in the past few months over to the scrap yard..

If you want to know the age of the tires, after the 245/50/16, there are a bunch of numbers. The last four numbers (which might be 'circled') are as follows.
ABCD are the 4 numbers. A and B are the week the tire was made, C and D are the year. Example...if ABCD are 0609, it was the 2nd week in Feb. 2009.
