Thoughts on X-Pipes
So I dont really know too much about rwhp gain by exhaust upgrades. I am planning on going the cheap way, which i researched was no different than throwing on a $1000 system. I am planning on replacing my mufflers with a straight pipe and my resonators and H-pipe with an X-pipe and straight pipe. What do you guys think about this?
Will i gain any HP? Would removing the rear cats give any hp? would this make the car too loud without the cats? do long tube headers make the car louder or more quiet at idle? thanks guys |

Lot of questions here, lets see if we can tackle them all. With the exception of changing/removing your cats or adding long tube headers...you won't gain any power by changing your exhaust. The mods you listed won't net you any more. A muffler delete sounds good but generally produces drone. Drone sucks and if you drive on the highway at all it will probably bother you. This set up is pretty loud overall but thats all up to the driver and maybe your neighbors. Long tube headers will make things much louder.

See that you're in CA, so long tubes and/or high flow cats may be an issue. If you want sound the cheap way with minimal drone, a nice pair of mufflers welded in will do the trick. Now as far as which brand - that's a whole other subject. I had Flowmaster Super 44's welded in and I'm happy with the sound. I just did it for the sound, I believe gains from any type of muffler are non-existent. There is minimal if any drone in 6th gear, and none in any other gear. Combined with an intake, the sound is throaty but very comfortable for long drives. Good luck!

lots of questions. Don't expect gains from just a cat back, although you might increase exhaust flow. I have the SW retro with JBA shorties and there is a drone ONLY when accelerating lol. But thats really just the exhaust playing its glorious beats under my right foot. X-pipe helps in scavenging and IMO with a more aggressive and deeper tone. If you have the L99 engine and you remove the resonators, when the AFM kicks in you are gonna have a nasty drone from other members postings with almost any exhaust. I might be mistaken there, but its what I have read. Spend your money on a quality exhaust. Flowmaster to me got old, so I stayed away from them and magna flow. It was really a toss between SLP and SW for me. I went SW cause it produced a better overall sound.
