Employment

Hello my fellow C5 Members. So i know this maybe a less than optimal idea. Perhaps even, a waste of time. However, i figured id give it a try and see if anyone knows of any jobs that a 19 year old can do with a highschool degree, working towards a 4 year degree (3rd year now) and has aspirations of becoming an engineer or lawyer.

I'm not asking for ideas like (Wal-Mart! and McDonald's!!)

I'm asking if any of you are employer's or know an employer who needs someone who is young, strong, dependable, and not disrespectful (Except when necessary).

If your looking for a summer type job while your going to college why not try to get on with a mechanical contractor as a helper. If your getting into engineering that would be good experience.

I hire two to three helpers every year that are going to school. I make sure what they are taking in some way relates to what we do. It's a big help for both sides

It's rare these days to see real, bonafide good advice in the first post. I applaud you, good sir.

Tip based jobs can be very rewarding, with minimal time investment or experience.

I made 100+ a day in college waiting tables.

Short shifts, schedules are generally very flexible.

If you have a casino in your area try dealing poker. Part time dealers make more than enough money to be very comfortable. Although a course and a general interest in the game itself is often necessary. If you do take this path don't be seduced by the fast, easy money. Stick with your goals!

Great advice above about going into something field related. Also see if any law firms need a clerk/mailboy, anything to get your foot in the door. It will look great on your resume.

Good luck to you man! Hope you realize all of your goals!

Loss Prevention. You work retail but you arrest shoplifters and don't deal with customers. Pay is solid and you have a lot of autonomy.

It's easy to sit behind a keyboard and tell others what they should do. The reality is, it's tough to find ANY type of job. I was seriously searching to everything and anything for 3 years straight. Sad thing is, I was actually turned down ater an interview from a pizza place, but hired to the first federal job I applied to.......

The only advice from someone that went through this not long ago is, don't give up. You'll get situations like mine where you're simply turned down from the crappiest job, but a much better employer may see something the minimum wage employers don't.
Seriously apply anywhere and don't get picky, a foot in the door is better than anything.
Also, make up your mind on what you want to do, it'll make your life much easier.

Try and find yourself an internship. Just know that jobs are hard to come by these days and you might not be able to be too picky.

Hell, I drive buses here for Ohio State.

I am located in Asheville North Carolina. I'm currently in my 2-3rd year of community college, and i'm maybe 3-4 select courses away from getting my Associate of Arts and transferring to a 4 year school.

As far as being picky i have no preference towards most jobs. I just wish to stay free of the Fast Food or Wal-Mart like industries. I don't view myself serving 10,000+ customers a day for a minimum wage a fair trade.

I would love to do just about anything, i have many interests, and i'm very athletic. So physically there is no job I can't do. I believe some people notice my age and may stereotype me. To some degree i'm inexperienced, but anyone can be. I may just be applying to the wrong places. Who knows for sure?

What i'm basically getting at is...If someone can invest some time to teach me the job that needs filling or give me a shot. I know I can do most non-specialized jobs.

P.S. Thank you for all the good tips.

P.S.S I was astonished as well to see useful posts!!

I lived down the mountain from you until 08. I was a plant manager in Hickory and Marion and assisted in our plant in Asheville. Long story short, plenty of entry level positions in the oil and gas exploration and production fields. Great learning for electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and other control systems. You would have to relocate, but earning potential is almost unlimited. It is dirty, hard and dangerous work. The problem with the industry is there hasnnot been a steady influx of young talent to replace the experianced people. The work is dirty, hard, and dangerous. It is a field where someone with a high school diploma can make real close to six figures in a very short time. Check out rigzone.com, or feel free to pm me if you want more specific info. There are several on this forum that are in the same line of work.

I admire your initiative, and good luck.

not a single business you see that doesn't hire young strong men to work in the back doing entry maintenance / janitorial stuff in the back where no one ever sees you.

don't over look any store or business with a decent sized building, just send in an app.

Does your school have an employment office? If not, talk to your academic adviser. They can probably hook you up with companies looking for interns.
