Salt Damage
Hello everyone,
New to the forum.. Just bought a black 2012 ls in August and it is my every day driver. I noticed today when I washed it that along the side-skirts are small, white dots, presumably from salt.. I live in PA, I'm about to buy a pos and garage my camaro for the winter... My question is, what is the best way to remove this? I have a good detailer, hoping he can compound and buff it out. I did purchase the zurich shield and it does cover salt damage, but Ive been told they don't cover chips and I believe what I have are small, toothpick point chips.. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Sounds like paint chips. The gills on these cars seem to be susceptible to chipping. If it's paint chips, it probably can't be buffed out, and if you drive any car at all, it will eventually get chips. You should see my car after 150,000 miles.

If the chips are on the "gills" in front of the rear tires, these are paint chips from sand and gravel, could be from pellet size chunks of salt also.
The body design of these cars allows this dibris to come off the front tires and hit right where the gills are. Most everyone has these chips and they are actual chips in the paint.....you won't buff them out. This won't be covered under any warranties that I know of. There's really no fix, short of sanding and repainting the area. I used the molded splash guards which helped quite a bit.

Options to protect from getting chips:
Splash guards Clear bra Options to protect the vehicle once chips have occurred: Sand and repair but without protection, they will return. Keep a good coat of wax in that area. Touchup paint. As stated, it's the design of the vehicle. |
