MAF vs VE Tune

Can anyone give me some info on what is better? Having someone do a MAF only tune or doing a full VE tune with HP Tuner?

MAF can end up with smoother overall operation, but struggles with transients. VE is better with transients, but is more susceptable to atmospheric changes (temperature, humidity, barometric pressure). Measuring airflow vs. calculating airflow... A blend of both is the best of both worlds, as the PCM will bias towards one model or the other based on the activity. MAF only works well enough on naturally aspirated, centri blower, and turbo applications. PD blowers can do some extreme airflow changes very rapidly, so VE is a good idea in those scenarios

With stock programming, the PCM uses a blended airmass derivative (filtered MAF + VE calcs) below 4000 RPM to set fueling. Above 4000 RPM, it only uses the filtered MAF reading.

The MAF is good at reading steady-state airflow, but shit at measuring changing airflow, as during throttle transients. Which is why VE is used in addition to the MAF. Lazy tuners do MAF only tunes because it's quicker and easier than tuning VE as well, especially now that there's no longer a traditional VE table. I can usually tell a MAF only tune just by driving the car and feeling the throttle response. As Steck mentioned, it's really bad with a PD blower, but I can feel it even in N/A applications. The MAF just can't track the changing airflow quickly enough during throttle transitions, so you get hesitation and less than optimal throttle response.

To zman12, your car was MAF only due to time constraints both at the dyno and on the road... It was tuned in a snow storm and had to be delivered. Lol.

MAF only really depends on MAF placement. My Z06 actually tracks commanded air/fuel pretty dead nuts on, but my MAF is also right in front of my throttle body.

The reason why I was wondering is sometimes if I punch it hard I will get a pretty nasty hiccup or hesitation. But it does not do this all of the time. I was thinking I may have one of the weak MAF's but I checked that last night and by the code it is a "strong one"

I think I have a MAF only tune. Think I need to get this redone with MAF and VE. Anyone have a recomandation for a good tuner in Chicago?
