Vmax Intake Manifold "BLACK ICE-olator" V6 LLT Base Test Results

Hey All,

I was able to get testing done on a base V6 LLT A6 Camaro today and it is very encouraging. It is a bit time consuning to do it the right way (5-6 hours with dyno time, parts swap time and processing numbers), but worth it for proper data.

I am not going to be able to publish all of the data but will give a brief description of todays process and some general results.

First, the car is completely stock with the exception of a VMax TB and one of my catch cans. The owner runs 87 octane and it is what we tested with. In all of the runs the coolant temps were kept consistant and there was no KR on any of the runs. So no worries about KR skewing the test results. The IAT's were also pretty consistant. The actual air temps today were in the 25-30*F area and pretty dry humidity wise.

All tests were done with the hood closed and a fan blowing lightly on the front of the car to keep the car from getting too hot on the 5 back-to-back runs with each test session. There was about a 30 second wait between runs from the end to starting again in each session.

The only exception was I did an open hood test session with no BLACK ICE-olator and a fan blowing directly on the intake. I will get into this test at a later time.

The test results I am giving are based on the averages of the best and worst runs from each session at 500 RPM increments staring at 2500 and finishing at 6800 (not all runs went to 7000). The base runs I am using are after I tested the BLACK ICE-olator and then removed it to back up the previous base runs.

So the gains with the BLACK ICE-olator were as follows:

Plus 10.5 RWHP and 21.5 RWT at 2500
Plus 11 RWHP and 19.5 RWT at 3000
Plus 9.5 RWHP and 15 RWT at 3500
Plus 20.5 RWHP and 27.5 RWT at 4000
Plus 13.5 RWHP and 16 RWHP at 4500
Plus 13 RWHP and 13.5 RWT at 5000
Plus 11 RWHP and 11 RWT at 5500
Plus 11 RWHP and 9 RWT at 6000
Plus 4 RWHP and 3.5 RWT at 6500
Plus 1 RWHP and 2 RWT at at 6800

So the gains are in the ball park with the previous test last week with the exception of up top and I am thinking this is mainly due to the stock air box. But still for a basically stock car very nice gains and consistant.

On the closed hood tests, the BLACK ICE-olator session showed the temps at the plenum averaged about 25*F cooler at the area behind the TB, the front of the plenum and the middle. It was about 45-50*F cooler at the back of the plenum.

Going back to the hood open test and no isolator and a fan on the plenum, the temp at the plenum were about 15-20*F cooler at all points from the hood closed and BLACK ICE-olator installed. The avarage RWHP and RWT numbers were just about even between the two session, lead changing side from one poitn to the other but close. The open hood and fan numbers went up at 6500 and 6800 and I attribute this to better IAT's and the cooler plenum helping on top more. So it appears the BLACK ICE-olator "acts" similar to the hood being open and a fan blowing on the engine. Not bad to $150-175 at all.

The install is not too bad and the hardest part is the two back bolts for the fuel rail heat shield. Just tight back there and will take some patience. I did take a bunch of pics and will make an install thread eventually.

So that is the short story and summary for folks. You can still get in on this first run if you want, just let me know. I should be doing another test with a Vararam, exhaust and tuned car next week if time permits.

Have a great Sunday all.

Wow. 20hp and almost 30 ft/lbs of TQ? WTF!!!!

This is just the isolator? Not the ported intake manifold?

I wonder what the numbers will be on a modded car? Looking forward to your test next week Mike. Good Work!

This is awesome ...great news for the LLT. The only thing I am not sure about, is this the same insulator that RX (Tracy ) has ?...if not, what are the differences?

Thanks for the kind words folks as it makes a Sunday workday worth it.

I do have them for sale and as mentioned there are a few left out of the first run. This forst run is $150 shipped and after that it looks like it will be $169 shipped. Toy can pay via Paypal to thevettedr@aol.com and please include a good contact phone number.

In looking at the A/F data it appears that the BLACK ICE-olator install by itself needs no tuning changes. This makes it appealing to bolt on cars that are untuned for sure.

I mentioned it is a realitively easy install, but there are a couple spots you will need common sense and patience. If you do not have much mechanical ability or get frustrated easily, then I suggest having someone do it for you. I posted some info here:

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=201967

Adding a ported intake manifold should work well with it, but it should be something that is proven to work without the BLACK ICE-olator first as this piece may make a bad ported intake look good.

This is the same piece that Tracy from RX tested. VMax developed and made the part and Tracy is marketing it and did the base dyno test last week. This will be available from everyone who is a VMax dealer.

Good to see the interest in this for sure from folks. If you need one let me know and I will do my best to get you one from this first run which is being cut tomorrow (Monday).

Thanks.

Wow awesome!
Does this work for sure with a VR or no? I really want to buy this and is it too late for the first batch?
