Tombstone, AZ

Decided to go down to Tombstone yesterday. Tombstone is the famous old west mining town founded in 1879 for silver mining. The town is probably more famous for the Gun Fight at the OK Corrall involving the Earp family against Cowboys and the ensuing Earp Vendetta Ride in 1882. The town got up over a population of 10,000 but it all collasped when the pump draining all the water out the mines burned and the price of silver fell through the floor. Tombstone is not a registered National Historic Place and largely relies on tourism to survive. I parked on Freemont Street and walked over to the OK Corral. From there its a short walk to the historic district and the Tombstone Courthouse.

That's the Bird Cage Theater that was on Ghost Hunters. I talked to that guy for about 10 minutes, he's pretty authentic. I went through Bisbee and the rest of Cochise County on the way home, it total it was 575 miles since I took the back mountain roads.

Yeah Deadwood is a little far from Phoenix. There is a lot of stuff like that sign down in Tombstone, especially around the Harley shop.

I doubt it, he had lots of complaints about the manager bringing too much attention to the place. Ghosts don't complain like that, nice guy though. He sold me a copy of the Tombstone Epitath.

Nice pics!

You must have been there early in the morning or late in the day. Place looked dead. Was pretty busy around 2:00. Wish I would have known you were going. A group of us were out 4-wheeling nearby and stopped by for lunch at Margaritas. Not recommended - BTW. Service was good, but the food was pretty lame.

Tombstone has a special place in my heart. For years, a group of us has helped local ranchers and AZ Game and Fish on Adopt-A-Ranch projects. Nice to learn some history and how hard these guys work. As a side benefit, they tend to keep more gates open for outdoor enthusiasts. Another benefit was getting to know the owner of the Rose Tree Inn. Ended up getting married there and had our reception at Big Nose Kate's Saloon.
