Lol @ Camaro insurance

So I called my insurance agent this morning to get price quotes for the 2LT V6 Camaro and the 2SS V8 Camaro. These are the specs that came up (for 2012, since the 2013 information isn't out yet):

What I'm currently paying for my 2006 Mazda6: $1,048 per year
Camaro 2LT V6: $1,150 per year
Camaro 2SS V8: $1,068 per year

...... Both the agent and I were baffled as to why the V8 would cost me less in insurance per year. Both have the same exact insurance coverage and both include vehicle replacement cost. Any reason this could be? Either way, I'm not complaining. Ha. She said she even put the V8 as a high performance vehicle which she claimed is the "worst case scenario" meaning the highest cost. Any insight on why this is?

Vehicle safety rating probably has something to do with it... My insurance went up about 10 dollars a year when I got mine, and that was trading from a four cylinder coupe...Scion which I used to drive back and forth to Louisiana every two weeks..

LOL My SS cost me the exact same amount a couple of months ago to insure for the year. I didnt argue with that price tho, I can remember back in 86 I had a new Camaro and it was $3000 a year to insure, needless to say it sat in my garage for a couple of years until I had it paid off in wich time I only rode a motorcycle year round.

It all has to do with the pay out rates for your age group..I'm 25 and switched from a a 4 door G6 to my SS and pay less. Something to do with how many payouts they have had in that age group comparied to other cars. My agent just for kicks showed me how a 2005 Civic SI cost more than my SS since more 20 something males have them and they have more payouts on them than my car.

So that could be true. Younger people tend to buy the V6 since it's more affordable, and they also get into more accidents. The V8 may tend to be bought by people more "responsible" or they drive less because they use it for weekends and sunny days, etc...

Also I see 10 to 1 ratio of V6 to SS, so with the higher amount of V6 on the road, there will be more V6 in accidents.

It's both actually. The payout table and the additional safety features in the V8 car (brembos, etc.).

The age of 25 makes little to no difference. It saved me $10 a year

My 2ss vert (2012) is cheaper by almost $100 every 6 months over our 2012 Toyota sienna minivan. Still can't figure this one out

I would agree with this although it is still surprising... also more v6's are actually driven vs being garaged so more prone to accidents, theft, etc. I would also just guess that the average age of a SS owner is going to be higher which helps. Since insurance is really just a pooling of risk, you get to pay to the mistakes made by other drivers with the same make / model.
