New to area..Need some help/advice

Hey guys, Just moved to the area yesterday. Drove my 2007 VW GTI from Indiana all the way out here to Hanscom AFB. I've been contemplating on trading my gti for a Camaro since I got back from Japan in May. I was out there for 3 years and my car was hardly driven. I just crossed 38,000 miles on it and owe just a lil more than 4k on it. KBB shows a decent trade in value for it so it got me really thinking bout doing it. While I was home in Indy, i almost took my car to a dealer to trade it in after seeing the Festive cars driving around down while on my way to the VW dealer to get a tune up done on it. My main concern would be driving in the winter time. I know from growing up in Indiana that winter tires make a lot of difference so of course I'd have those. I heard this past winter was very abnormal compared to most. I will drive I95/Rt 3 back and fourth each day, and will use it as a DD. my GTI gets bout 31/32 Highway miles, i know the Camaro doesn't get quite that but but its not to far off. Would this be a bad idea to go ahead and do it or should i just hold off and keep the GTI and pay it off? If i do decide to do it, anyone have any recommend places to check out in the area for getting one. I haven't seen any dealers since I just got here but have looked online and seen some in Boston, NH, and RI.

I drove my camaro in the snow once and it was horrible. I still had the P-Zeros on it so I guess thats why it sucked so back. Literally no traction at all, tires were spinning idling in 2nd gear. I'm sure with snow tires it could do a lot better and thats what people keep saying. I am just used to driving a 2wd S10 with no weight in the rear and bald tires and it was far more managable in the snow than that one time in the camaro. I also drive the rt3-93 to get into the city year round.
Come winter time I am definately changing the tires.

But as far as DDing a Camaro every other part of it is perfectly managable as I DD mine.
The only problem I really have with mine is a sticky clutch pedal but the dealer is working on it all covered under warrenty.

Check out Best Chevrolet in Hingham, they are right off exit 15 on rt3.

I don't drive my car in winter if there is snow - but I don't have winter tires -- others have said the cars like a tank - I'm sure they'll chime in soon on that

I got my car at Quirk in Manchester NH - not a bad place -- McMulkin in Nashua is also good. I take my baby there for all her service needs and they have replaced my back bumper twice and she looks like new so they have a great body shop and service dept.

I drive my car everyday and have never had any issues (again, aside from stupid people who can't stop and not driving her in the snow) - if you can take the payments, then do it. I mean, it's not like you don't already have a car payment - you'll just have one a little longer and have the best damn thing on 4 wheels for it (I'm partial though)

(Oh and WELCOME to our neck of the woods )

thanks for the welcome Tessa! Area seems real nice from what I've seen so far, except for I95 being PACKED round 5-6pm lol.

I'd have no choice to drive it in snow if I were to get it, I used to drive in snow growing up in Indiana in a small 92 Toyota Paseo. didnt really ever have a problem, and drove a beater Toyota Vista with bald tires in Japan, since I turned 16, Ive only gotten stuck once and that was this past winter in Japan when we got 19 inches of snow over night.

If i get a decent trade in value, i'd pay off this load and then have bout 7-8K that would be rolled over onto the price of the car, leaving me with what I'd like to be around 20K, less that what I paid for my GTI in 08. So it's do-able. Insurance looks like it'll go up at most, $13 i believe.

I'll have to check those dealers out though when I get some extra time, possibly this weekend. Thanks to both of you for the advice.

chiming in!

Oh definately yes buy the Camaro!!! It's like drug prevention just say no to imports!

I drive mine year round snow or no snow the camaro's do drive like a tank with just all-season tires, with winter it's like driving a tank with front wheel drive it's amazing what a tread pattern and tire material difference will do for traction.

BTW definately get snow tires for the boston area the amount of corners you take that aren't plowed or salted is horrendous. I95 sucks horribly that time of day i got stuck in that log jam you speak of once coming back from burlington.

I'll weigh in. I've got a V6 automatic. I put Scorpion Snow and Ice tires on 18" wheels for the winters of 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, and I put a few boxes of kitty litter in the trunk. While the first winter was abnormally snowy and last winter was abnormally dry, I drove mine every day, except the actual snow days in '10-'11, because they were just that bad. I probably would have stayed home with my old car on those days as well. I drove up my street and in parking lots with an inch or two of snow trying to get the back end to spin out, and I couldn't.

The car has a good weight distribution, and if you get good snows, and drive responsibly, you'll be ok.

Welcome to the area!

Thanks guys. I keep thinking about it, rethinking about it, considering it. seeing all the camaros in the area and on base today sure didnt help me any. im strongly considering it. Id like to wait till the GTI is paid off, but i dont think i'd get as good of a trade in value by then if I wait.

my next be concern would be how would i register it? my GTI is registered in the state of FL from when I was stationed out there. If I were to get a camaro up here, would it have to be registered up here or would my Florida plates be transferred over to the car and I'd be able to register it over the phone with the state of FL?

If you still have a florida address I don't see why not
And being in the military I don't think cops will give you any trouble about out of state plates.
But buying the car in Massachusetts means you have to pay Mass taxes on it. You might be better off buying in NH then. Someone else might be able to shed some better light on this.

Yea come to NH to buy it no sales tax!!! Quirk Chevrolet in Manchester & Bank's Chevrolet in Concord are both pretty good places to go i don't know about many other NH cjevy dealerships i'm sure there's a ton around. I do know Quirk will give you a good deal on your trade in as they have a VW dealership in the next building over owned by quirk so they don't need to find a spot to put your car. If you still own a residence in florida you can do the phone registration if not and or when you change over to Massachusetts they will hound you like wild rabid wolves to register in the state. Want my opinion buy a 2' x 2' piece of land from someone in NH and register it up here and you won't get the same out of state treatment you'd get with florida plates or just get your government/veteran plates if your eligible and they will leave you alone entirely regardless of the state.

If you are going to drive it in the winter, I highly recommend getting the Pirelli Snow and Ice tires. This past winter was pretty a no snow season but the couple of storms we did get, the tires helped alot. Also the P-Zeros that come from the factory are only good for temperatures above 45 degrees (the rubber hardens below 45 and are pretty much useless).

I'll have to look into NH. Quirk might be my best option trade in wise. I checked their site. Internet sales sent me an email offering 27,681 for the 2012 1LT they got on the site. Not sure if it's a good deal or not.

You have to pay state tax based on where it is registered -- so if FL has a sales tax, you would pay that.
I bought my car in NH and paid MA sales tax - it's just the way it works - plus, even if I hadn't paid, I'd have paid when I registered the car. If FL has no slaes tax, then yes, buy it in NH and register it in FL if you can.

I almost paid 30k for a 2010 1LT so it seems to be not bad for a '12
