Cutting a hole for the new fuel pump!
Took off weekend to get my car back on the road... Don't want to drop the rear end, exhaust, and tank to change out the fuel pump...... Don't trust anyone else to touch ole girl.... I am going to sleep on this thought of cutting a hole in the floor to get at the fuel pump... So! any hecklers out there want to weigh in on a guy who works seven days a week wanting to take a short cut.... Fire Away..... Like I said, gunna sleep on this decision....

I guess just ask yourself if you can live with yourself knowing there is a giant hole in your car once you are done. Plus if you do go this route I hope you know exactly where to cut cause it would really blow if you cut at the wrong area and had to do it all over again.

Is it not covered under warranty? I think I'd let someone else do that one if it means cutting a hole.
Now, I have to question the motives of whoever designed this - as it seems like a huge amount of work to go to for something that will surely fail at some point. GM trying to pad future mechanical work in their shops? |

We used to do this at the dealership to all wheel drive Tempos. Realistically it doesn't harm the car at all, just make sure you know where to cut and what is below. We used to drill a hole with a 3/4" hole saw and then use a nibbler to cut out the panel

Even my POS VW had a cut out for the fuel pump. What gives?

upgrade in fuel pump
Due to the upgrades in the motor.... I have all but voided my warranty.. That said, I have come to the decision that I will have this car for some time.... I guess I am just looking for some motivation from someone who has done this that all will go well... We learn from our mistakes and I can only hope that a wire or fuel line under the floor doesn't come in contact with my metal router bit... If so, check back I will have one heck of a story to tell....

Surely there is someone out there that has thought of making a buck and coming up with a templet and a procedure for cutting a simple hole with a nice looking access panel thats sealed ... well if there are no takers I will step up and be the guinny pig.....

If all you want to do is drag race, go with the straight axle for sure. The IRS cant handle traction. That's another sore spot about this site, 3 years ago I told people here they would break half shafts when they get serious about 60 foot times without traction control activated. As we all know, traction control limits power by controlling wheel spin sensed by the ABS sensors. They laughed me out of town, posting their You tube links of one guy that ran 11s without failure one time. Well what happened next? Multiple threads about half shafts breaking. |

I've heard of lots of people cutting a hole in the trunk of 4th gens... I'm not sure exactly how much needs to be removed but if it entails a day or two of cussing and swearing just to get to the pump... I'd cut the hole... Just makes it easier to change in the future. If you do, please do post measurements

Have you thought about a remote mounted fuel pump? And perhaps taking the time to get the old one out correctly? Its your ride man , and you seem to have given this a lot of thought, Just trying to bring up options, Good luck in what ever you decide.

I own an avalanche and it is pretty common for folks to cut an access panel under the rear seats to replace the fuel pump. Several people made detailed descriptions of where to cut and ways to easily reattach the removed section of floor. It would be hard decision whether to do it to my 2011 SS but pretty easy one my 2004 avy.
Good luck!
