First gear auto trans question
I have a 2012 ZL1, and I understand the trans always starts in 2nd gear, unless forced to first by putting the car into manual mode and using the paddles. Would it be possible to tune the transmission to use 1-6 gears in sport mode and leave the tour mode unchanged?

Is this true or is it the same as the Camaro SS?
In the Camaro SS whenever the computer does the shifting (D - Drive) or M (Sport) the transmission always starts in 1st gear. Only when in M (Manual - Tap Shift Mode) does the transmission only drop to 2nd gear. You must then tap down to 1st gear. But if the computer is doing the shifting (D) of (M), the transmission always starts in 1st gear. Lots of Camaro SS owners still think the transmission only starts in 2nd gear (in all modes). But as mentioned, you can tune any mode (M -tap shift mode) to start in first gear. |

The way you can check this is start out in D or M (where the computer is doing the shifting) from a dead stop.
Then mash the gas pedal and see when the transmission makes its first shift. Remember, 1st gear will redline somewhere around 40- 45 mph (I don't know the exact ZL1 shift points - but it should be around 40-45mph). So if your transmission shifts around 40-45 mph, you must be in 1st gear making the shift to 2nd gear. If your transmission starts you in 2nd gear, it will not up shift until 65-70mph (2nd to 3rd gear shift point) under wide open throttle acceleration. |

Where I work is off of a busy highway with a speed limit of 55 mph. While sitting at the stop sign waiting to get on the highway, I can gun it and the car will not up shift until I let off the throttle between 55-60 and I'm around 5k rpms when this happens. |

When you mention M are you talking about M (Manual - Tap shift)or M (Sport - computer doing the shifting). If you're starting from a dead stop (computer doing the shifting in D -drive) and it doesn't shift until 60+ mph, then you're defintely in 2nd gear. |

I haven't tried this in D as I always drive in Sport mode unless I'm on the interstate and using cruise control. I'll try it the next time I work and see. |

With HP Tuners, it can be configured to allow first gear with the paddle shifters in either mode.

Have you (or any tuner you know) hooked up a ZL1 to HP tuners and looked at the shift profile in each mode? That would show if in D (Drive) the ZL1 starts in 2nd gear. It might be true that the ZL1s do start in 2nd gear (in all modes). But after all the confusion with the Camaro SS (lots of owners thinking all modes start in 2nd gear), I wasn't so sure about the ZL1. |

its right in the ZL1 owners manual:
Notice: Shifting out of P (Park) or N (Neutral) with the engine running at high speed may damage the transmission. The repairs would not be covered by the vehicle warranty. Be sure the engine is not running at high speed when shifting the vehicle. D (Drive): This position is for normal driving. It provides the best fuel economy. When the ZL1 is in D (Drive), the first shift after start will be from 1 (First) gear. Following starts will begin in 2 (Second) gear. If more power is needed for passing, and the vehicle is: • Going less than 56 km/h (35 mph), push the accelerator pedal about halfway down. • Going about 56 km/h (35 mph) or more, push the accelerator all the way down.

So I guess guys are going to have to tune their cars to change that. I like the part "push the acclerator pedal "about" halfway down. |
