I Now See What Attracts Folks to the V8

My daughter's boyfriend (a Marine) is deployed in Afghanistan. His car is parked in her apartment complex in a garage as it is more secure than the base. She asked me to take it out for a run today since she doesn't drive a stick and he will not be back for a few months.

It is a 2006 LS2 V8 GTO and heavily modded. I know about the custom cam, and I could see the K&N intake, custom manifold, headers and custom exhaust. The car idles like a drag racer and sounds like one. It is just so very different from my V6.

I was very careful with it at least at first (my daughter was riding with me) and we rode a few miles city and a few miles highway. I spent about an hour tutoring the girl on driving a stick and she was getting pretty good with it just before we took it back to the garage.

Just as we were at the end of that drive I put my foot down and let it rip. My daughter was all smiles and says she had never had her boyfriend drive it that way. I was very impressed with the power across all RPMs (unlike my V6). We had the radio off the whole time and me as a radio guy would not want that as a DD, but it was sure nice to experience it. That is one heck of a noisy (in a mostly good way) car.

I can sure see now the attraction of folks to the V8 Camaros. I am not ready to defect yet, so don't start saying "I told you so". My V6 has more than enough power for me, even though it didn't seem like that when I hopped out of the GTO into my Camaro. We put 10 bucks of gas in the GTO while we were out and it reminded me that my DIC says I am getting 22.6 overall, and the last two tanks were 24.2 and 28.4.

I'm trying to get some pics and I'll post when I get them (it is the middle of the night in Afghanistan).

V8's FTW! Power really is an obsession and you always want more!

Definitely can understand wanting to stick with a V6 though, why I still kept my Pontiac G6 as my DD and the camaro is the garage queen but it is definitely great fun and worth every penny that you spend in gas when she is out.

I the 04-06 GTO's... Eventually I would like to get another one after the Camaro is paid off... Then the Camaro would just sit in storage and I would drive the $#!7 out of the GTO.

I test drove a 2011 v6 auto Camaro when I first moved back from Alaska, and I was very impressed with it. IMO you can't go wrong with either decision between the LLT/LFX or LS3/L99. They are all great, just depends on what you want to do with them.

You can make a v6 or a 4cyl just as quick, just will never have the same torque or sound as a V8.

I Holden vehicles so glad GM is bringing more over to the States!

I've been thinking of picking up a Goat, G8 or the newer Commodore aka Chevy SS after the Camaro is paid off and let the Camaro remain the garage queen

I was talking with my daughter about the sound. She said mine sounds great, but I replied there was no way, not ever, it would sound anything like the V8. I am good with that, and yes the V6 sounds very similar to a Porsche, but sound the same as a V8 - nope, just ain't gonna happen.

The soldier actually wants the car to be driven, rather than sit idle for 6 months. Isn't that better? And I certainly didn't "stomp" on it like I do my own car. The GTO is a beauty of a machine that just loved the attention it was getting. It saw about 3 seconds of pedal-to-the-metal. Don't worry - my daughter made sure I behaved.

Noticed your in NC, is this GTO red? My brother in law is a Marine, along with myself, and there is a heavily modded red GTO that lives down the street from him. I had an 06 M6 that was all stock except for exhaust and I miss that thing. When I was stationed there I would see it everyday, but that was about a year and a half ago. Been in Okinawa ever since.

And by the way, he's not a soldier, he's a US Marine.

I'm sure it was awesome no doubt. I'd love it too, but I'm not sure what you expected?

I mean...its a cammed LS2...it should be very powerful. Can't really compare to your V6...or even a stock V8 for that matter.

I can't wait until we finally get cams for the V6. It is happening now and we have already seen some very promising results.

Glad you had fun.
